Guest somedude Posted October 24, 2008 Report Posted October 24, 2008 (edited) I only have one pc, with vista and its my work pc, so im not trying to install any OS's on it. I figured using a virtual machine (vmware with windows xp installed) would do the trick, but i am having troubles. (http://www.modaco.com/content/i900-omnia-rom-discussion/274800/no-pda-device-found-close-device/) Has anyone successfully flashed with a virtual machine? I know its not recommeneded but it is my only option right now. Edited October 24, 2008 by somedude

Guest Ingvarr Posted October 24, 2008 Report Posted October 24, 2008 I flashed it three times from vmware just fine...
Guest TheDarkRealm Posted October 24, 2008 Report Posted October 24, 2008 Works fine from a VM, Ive flashed mine a few times from inside it. Make sure you have all drivers installed, and it helps having the VM maximised full screen as VMWare will automatically pass all USB devices through to it. Good luck!

Guest iTnkD4iAm Posted October 25, 2008 Report Posted October 25, 2008 (edited) I flash mine through a vmware winxp sp3 machine w/ a logitech wireless keyboard and wifi usb attached. Unlike haiuk, I'm running on window mode and I've already flashed my phone through vmware 6 times w/ 1 unsuccessful flash (The phone part failed to flash -- and this was from downgrading the firmware. Not sure if that's relevant. Scary moment but fortunately reflashing worked  ) Edited October 25, 2008 by iTnkD4iAm
Guest RodolfoG Posted October 25, 2008 Report Posted October 25, 2008 I am using Vista x64 with VMWare and the procedure was failing after all the open port retries.... It finally worked when I went full screen... thanks for the tip!!
Guest somedude Posted October 25, 2008 Report Posted October 25, 2008 okay this is very frustrating. ive wasted hours of my day and i still cant update. ive tried fullscreen mode with no luck. i am running vmWare player, not workstation, not sure if there is a difference. I think im just going to give up. It should be easier to update the phone.

This could be causing the problems but not being a VM expert I wouldn't know for sure. It could also be a config problem with your virtual machine and how it is accessing the USB ports.
Guest iTnkD4iAm Posted October 26, 2008 Report Posted October 26, 2008 I think im just going to give up. It should be easier to update the phone. Well it is relatively easy to update the phone's firmware. We have the option to update via winXP or vista. Just make sure to install the relevant modem drivers for your machine ---- assuming we're using samsung's authorized firmwares  If you're referring to the leaked roms and can't find a winxp machine then what you can do is extract the relevant files from the i900xx.exe and upgrade your omnia using grandpix (I believe there's an WinXP and Vista version)

Guest somedude Posted October 26, 2008 Report Posted October 26, 2008 okay, i updated to vmware worstation, installed windows xp service pack 3, hard resetted my omnia, ran vmware in fullscreen, updated the vmx file to recognize usb 2.0 connections and i still get the stupid "no pda device found error". im not sure what everyone elses version of the omnia is, but mines is: i900DXHG3. Has anyone with this version successfully updated the omnia with vmware? i been banging my head for days and i dont understand why i cant get this to work and why everyone else can.
Guest fubuman_05 Posted October 27, 2008 Report Posted October 27, 2008 (edited) you have installed activesync? Edited October 27, 2008 by fubuman_05

VMWare Workstation works fine. Have you installed the Samsung modem driver?
Guest somedude Posted October 28, 2008 Report Posted October 28, 2008 VMWare Workstation works fine. Have you installed the Samsung modem driver? yes, i have installed activesync 4.5 and the samsung modem driver for xp. ran vmware in full screen. resetted, restart phone several times. still get the stupid "no pda device found error" still no results. can anyone else think of what maybe wrong?
Guest skullster Posted October 29, 2008 Report Posted October 29, 2008 (edited) yes, i have installed activesync 4.5 and the samsung modem driver for xp. ran vmware in full screen. resetted, restart phone several times. still get the stupid "no pda device found error" still no results. can anyone else think of what maybe wrong? Hi I have flashed about 5 times now using VMware and have not had any issues. I run VMware workstation 6 with xp pro in a windowed vm. Activesync 4.5 is installed but for flashing you need to disable usb connections on activesync. Activesync is used for copying files and installing programs but not for flashing. The Samsung modem software needs to be installed then once you connect the Omnia to the usb you need to make sure the USB port is connected to the VM by using the menu > VM > Removable Devices > USB devices > ( here make sure the samsung modem is ticked.) The Samsung modem will only show up just after the Omnia is restarted so you need to be on the ball the first time to make sure you assign it to the VM and not your host OS. (vista, linux etc) Its best to do this before you try the flashing exe to make sure the connection will be available. Also make sure you are using the VM and not a window on the host OS. Whilst you are using the VM it should default to connect new devices to VMware and not the host. You can check this will happen by using VM > Settings > USB controller and making sure the two boxes on the right are enabled (Enable highspeed support and Auto connect new USB devices when VM has focus) If for some reason the VM does not have a usb controller listed click the Add button to put one in. ( in which case this was your problem) It best whilst flashing to keep the VM in focus ( ie keep the cursor inside the VM and its title bar activated, to prevent problems with the host OS picking up the USB connection. Once you are happy the Omnia gets picked up as a modem after a soft reset you can go ahead and flash using one of the EXE - I have never used grandprix as it seems more prone to problems. Once the exe is started reset you phone whilst plugged into the usb and the Flash EXE should pick it up fine. If you had lots of stuff in My Storage you may want to tik to format this just to keep the file structure neat. I have flashed official roms and the Modaco and Passoa Roms. I am currently using the Passoa lite rom and its just the job so far. Once the first phase (PDA) of the flash is complete the Omnia will restart and the 2nd phase will commence (Phone) Watch out here as when it restarts the Omnia may appear as a different port in the USB devices so again be quick on the balll to make sure its in the removable devices and is ticked. After that its all plain sailing. Dont remove until the EXE tells you the phone is done. Then I suggest you also hard reset the phone to be on the safe side. The only issue I have had using this process is I once had the Phone section of the flash fail ( could not find port) But this was due to not keeping an eye on it and noticing the modem port had changed an was not connected. I just reflashed and all was well. Hope this helps. Please feedback your findings. If anyone else has a better way please post and perhaps we can come up with the definitive How to for VMware. Guest somedude Posted October 29, 2008 Report Posted October 29, 2008 (edited) thanks so much for the advice, but i am still having this 'no pda found' problem. maybe it has something to do with this generic usb data cable i have, (i lost the one that originally came with the phone) I notice that when i have the generic usb data cable plugged in, i can active sync just fine, but the phone doesnt charge. I couldve sworn it charged with the usb cable that came with the phone. So i ordered the original data cable and hopefully that can make a difference. Ill keep you guys posted. Once again thank everyone who posted in this thread for helping me. Edited October 29, 2008 by somedude
Guest Kendle Posted October 29, 2008 Report Posted October 29, 2008 Is activesync seeing the phone, is Vista seeing your phone via usb? If not then you are probably right about the cable.
Guest somedude Posted October 30, 2008 Report Posted October 30, 2008 (edited) Is activesync seeing the phone, is Vista seeing your phone via usb? If not then you are probably right about the cable. Yes the phone syncs up fine with vista and the virtual machine. Activesync is working just fine. A couple of other things i noticed, is that as soon as the screen that shows 'samsung omnia' comes up, i get the 'No PDA Device Found error' so in other words, its like the program is checking to see if the phone is connected before its even connects to activesync. That's right activesync is NOT used for the flashing (see my previous post) I think you had best try the pukka cable first if that doesn't work PM me and we can try a remote access and I'll have a look for you.

Guest Kendle Posted November 6, 2008 Report Posted November 6, 2008 If I remember correctly, I think I had XP installed on a separate partition, when I did my first flash from HG3. It was after that I flashed via WMWare. Can you install XP onto a separate partition?
