Hi all,

This may well be me expecting far to much from what is at the end of the day a phone. But the audio quality of my omnia seems to be fairly poor. The main reason i purchased the omnia is due to my ipod braking recently, i wanted a phone that was capable of also being a decent mp3player. After reading up it was the Omnia that got my attention.

I have read ways to adjust the volume, but to be honest the volume seems ok to m its just the actuall sound quality that is causing m a problem.

So have i expected to much? Or i there some way to adjust the sound? As at the moment things are very dull sounding.

P.S I am using touch player on the omnia

Cheers guys.

You should give one of these players a go...

(Also if you care about sound quality, forget about MP3 and use Flac instead)

Kinoma Play

or

Pocket Player

They have the same base.

TCPMP is an older free version.

CorePlayer is a newer commercial version.

I have the same problem in that I feel the audio quality is quite poor.

Could this be down to the quality of the stock headphones? What is a recommended set to try out?

I'm using a pair of sennheiser px25 (I think!) and the sound from my omnia is fantastic when played through the standard windows media player, much better than the touch player. I also have an ipod, fairly old one but still an ipod and I much prefer the omnia. Also the volume trick on the omnia means I can listen to my young persons popular beat combos lounder than my ipod, which is great on the noise train.

Attach a pair of decent headphones and you will see the difference. Having used a HTC Touch, Tilt and N95 for Mp3 playback I used to get really fed up with the poor quality and annoying background hiss. The Omnia is the first Windows mobile phone I've used that doesn't have this problem, it is in my opnion at least as good as an Ipod. I would also recomend Kinoma Play, it doesn't have all the extras that Pocket Player has but if you just want to play your music with a fantastic interface you will not find better.

Great! What would you say was 'a decent pair of headphones'?

there are model of earphones that can be broken into 2 parts so that the earphone cable is shorter, it will go perfectly with the earphone cable the samsung has provided. one thing i own right now is phiips she-9700, pretty decent sound, bassy, good for rnb, hiphop and rock.

Thanks guys. I've ordered some Denon C551s, so we'll see what difference they make.

Yes i agree with you. I have changed the stock headphones with the Sennheiser cx300 that i have and the sound quality is really great. I was using an md player/recorder and i think it is better than that. All the sound thing is about the earphones.

Also did you use slide2play? S2P...

What do you think about it? S2P or Kinoma Play? Which one is better do you think?

Thanks

Slide2Play uses the Windows Media Player, so format support and sound should be similar as using it directly.

While for instance Kinoma Play supports these audio formats:

MP3, AAC (iTunes), aacPlus, Flash Video (MP3 in an FLV), Windows Media Audio 9, FLAC

And CorePlayer supports these audio formats:

MP3, MP2, AAC, MKA, WMA, Midi*, WAV, OGG, Speex, WAVPACK, TTA, FLAC, MPC, AMR, ADPCM, ALaw, MuLaw, G.729

And Pocket Player supports these audio formats:

MP3, WMA, WMV, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, and WAV (+ some more formats like .APE and .MPC via plug ins)

"Which one is better for omnia? Finger friendly?"

Well Pocket Player and Kinoma Play are both finger friendly. Pocket Player has a really nice interface that is skinnable although virtually none of them of them are compatible with the Omnia's screen size. Pocket Player is really professional with lots of options and settings, it can do virtually everything you want. My big problem with it however is the speed of the interface which for me is not very quick when browsing through your Artist/Album tags etc ( I have around 20GB of music loaded on my Omnia). It takes around 3-4 seconds between button presses which is not long I surpose, but nothing like the speed of a dedicated player such as an Ipod.

Kinoma on the other hand cuts down on most of the options of Pocket Player but leaves in the essentials. The big difference is the big finger friendly menu driven system, it is so snappy!!. Faster than Pocket Player or any other media player I have used. You would swear you had a dedicated hardware player in your hands. In addtion it looks nice and pretty, album art is displayed correctly and the audio quality is excellent. There are a couple of bugs that need to be ironed out but nothing that would stop me from recomending it as the best finger friendly player out there. Why don't you download Kinoma Free Play the cut down version, a lot of the features from the Pay version are there so you can try before you buy.

For music i second Kinoma as the best one aslong as it supports the formats that you want to play.

Its slick looking, has good sound, is easy to use and finger friendly

It has some neat features for listening and searching online streaming content too, including Youtube.

Pocket Player is also good for music, but it does not look very good on Omnia's Wqvga screen. (You might be able to find some skins that do if you look around though)

For Video CorePlayer is the best bet.

Give RealPlayer a shot you might like it:

OR

Direct from the source but sadly the installation has to go thru ActiveSyc:

As for the sound of the Omnia try fiddling with the audio settings by:

Make a call to the following number:

Thanks for the help.

When i tried to change of HANDSET DAC(0C) from -4.5 to 0 db it makes a distortion right. I think it is better to change it to -1.5 db.

Did you try it?

By the way kinoma play doesnt have a shuffle option?

I had same experience: 0db gives distortion

I also did some listening tests yesterday and came to conclusion that there are small differences in sound quality between different programs.

When comparing kinoma, coreplayer and WMP using some MP3's created with EAC variable bitrate optimized settings (this is the claimed best quality you can get out of mp3) I came to following conclusion:

1. Kinoma free

2. WMP

3. Coreplayer

Used a high quality BeyerDynamic 990 headphone to do comparison.

Kinoma has the most "open"/"clear" sound of the 3. This is my personal experience and what I like. Others might have a completely different opinion/preference.

In coming days I will also include Mortplayer and maybe some other players to see if I can find the one with the best sound quality.

Anybody else did a comparison? What was your verdict?

Have done some listening tests using mainly Sennheiser HD650 and Sony MDR-EX90LP

Here is my listing, mind you the differences are small and are likely to differ based on file format and headphones used.

1. Kinoma Play

2. Pocket Player

3. WMP

4. Coreplayer

Better stick with -1.5 db or lower.

By the way kinoma play doesnt have a shuffle option?

It does:

You'll find a Shuffle option at the top of My Media Files > Music > Songs, the "All" folder of individual Artists, and individual Albums and Genres.

Kinoma for Windows Mobile is a very "young" player and still in development, If there is something you feel is missing or does not work perfectly, then head on over to the Kinoma Forum and give them a tip about it, they have been very forthcoming in including user requested functions in updates so far.
