Have Orange made the mistake that Sendo ALMOST made?

Hi there...

I was just looking at some of my old Sendo links, and I came across this very interesting report from TheRegister, almost a year ago to the day that Sendo pulled the plug on Microsoft...

With all hindsight, and reading everything that people are talking about on this forum, this makes very interesting reading:

http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/archi...hive/23006.html

Let just hear some of that interview again shall we:

"We asked Brogan if he was tempted by the Nokia platform offering that the Finns announced at Comdex, which gives licensees the source code to produce a knock-off Nokia clone.

Why, he retorted, would consumers buy either of the two if they were offered side-by-side?

Because um, we ventured, because Nokia makes great phones? And because it's a trusted phone brand?

Pah.

Hugh sincerely believes that Microsoft can produce a better phone than Nokia. Maybe, maybe he's right. "

Hmmmmmmm...

I think the SPV has potential to be a big hit...

Give it 6 months, I reckon Sendo will be kicking themselves (hard!).

Of course, who knows what REALLY went on between Sendo and MS...

the seno z100 was on my wishlist since the first anouncement, some made their way to developers and they had java running on it. no words from sendo about certification (i don'T beleive they planned to add it). i tried to get one of the pre-production units but no luck. and rumor tells that one sendo employee still uses his pre-production unit (on german vodafone) and it works like charme (his words, even mms). may it rest it peace... sad story

A couple of things.

[*]Always take things said in theregister with a grain of salt. They're notorious for Microsoft bashing and tend to be pretty lax in their reporting standards. Not that they don't have some great stories, but...

[*]The choice on app certification isn't up to the device manufacturer, it's up to the carrier deploying the device. If Sendo has sold to Orange, you can bet the security model would've been exactly the same as on the SPV.

[*]We still have a few Sendo devices and, aside from the fact that they're running old versions of the Smartphone OS, they work ok. Overall, the device quality was considerably lower than that of the SPV. (Someday I'll post pictures of a device I got "frustrated" with. It'll make you cry.)

I've got some apps from Z100 ... Does anybody know how to install them on SPV ? How to find if they are certified ?

They aren't. The required signature would come from Orange. Orange never had anything to do with the Sendo Z100

Hi there...

I'm still interested in seeing a real life Z100... what are you going to do with the ones that you don't like /me gives you lots of puppy dog eyes looks...

At least could you show us some photos of them?

Do they have any restriction on the things that you can run on them.. i.e. can you still develop programs and run them on it?

Yours hopefully..

Hi there...

My friend just sent me this link... so we now know the real reason why Sendo pulled out!

http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story2&cid...rosoft_sendo_dc

Several sources told Reuters last month that Sendo management believed certain special features it had put in its phone over and above Microsoft's usual standard operating system had emerged in other smartphones Microsoft was involved in.

In the filings, Sendo said that "Microsoft provided Sendo's proprietary hardware expertise and trade secrets to low-cost original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) who would not otherwise have had the expertise to manufacture handsets that would use (Microsoft software) and used Sendo's carrier-customer relationships to establish its own contractual relationships."

Hmmmm! :?

The above is the reason why Sendo are sueing MS, the reason they pulled out of the partnership with MS was because MS wouldn't allow Sendo to access the source code for the OS, which they needed to do to get certain functions (special or otherwise) to work on their phone.
