Most annoying Omina "Features" Petition

Hello Friends,

What do you think about an online petition about the 5 or 10 most annoying Omina Features (Bugs) here in this forum that will be sent to Samsung in a few weeks in hope for a fixing in the next FW-releases?

Maybe the Forum-Admin can create us an petition-poll in this tree?

e. g. for me its extremly frustatring that ...

a) the phone initally rings not at full volume at an incomming call (no other vendor has this "ear protection", and I want to decide myself if I need this feature)

B) Update handling: why does not there exist a global update site with firmware for every country/operator like Nokia does? Customers have to update with illegal and risky images/hacks to remove known bugs.

I bought my Omina in Germany and can´t get the offical J2 Update in Austria (from the samsung.at-Site), in Germany the update is not available on samsung.de and the repair-center in Austria is not authorized to handle phones bought outside Austria - great that we live in the EU ...

c) Voice-Announcement does not exist. If you had this feature on a Nokia Phone (like N95) you will hardly miss it on an Omnia. Sure you can buy VoiceCommand from MS, but as I heard it does not function properly (especialy with BT-Headsets), has very less settings and does not repeat the announcement.

d) Customizeable Widgets/Keyboards/Programm Launcher - why do we have to do all of this with additional tools and hacks?

There seems to be a lot of budget for TV- and other advertisements, but none for a solid product support, even for plain customers like Nokia has.

Use this file, add it with regedit.

Omnia sounds better than N95. I have both.

What does this do?

Where does it need copying to?

Disables the sourdine at the beginning of an incoming phone call? You sir have won some Internets.

What does this do?

Where does it need copying to?

Unzip, put the .reg file somewhere in your Omnia, find it and execute it. Or so I guess.

Posted

It is a registry file, sets your speakers to optimal, loud on your omnia.

just click on zip, inside there is the AUDIO.reg, double click will add the settings tou your phone. Soft reset.

I optimized both phone speaker and headset during digital audio, call audio, loudspeaker audio.

Ringtones volume: in the start menu, click on volume icon, set the right slider to make it louder.

Audio: in the start menu, click on volume icon, set the left slider to make it louder.

What does this do?

Where does it need copying to?

a) Incoming call my phone will ring slow and vibrate stop with voice announcement by voice command to tell me who call and continue with loud ring, (can N95 do that?) i dont think so

B) If we can cook our own ROM why we need to wait for Samsung? Yes Samsung has online firmware updates. Can you cook your own ROM for N95? I dont think so

c) Microsoft Voice Command for Omnia can read your sms, email, calls, reminder with option whether you want it via speaker or via headsets or only when free time. And not just that it also open application, tell time, tell battery level, next appointment, tomorrow appointment etc and it can play, stop, music, video by genre, artist, album and even you can ask what is the title of the song. N95 can do that? i dont think so

d) Yeah we can do this by just adding applications (SPB Mobile Shell, VITO, TOUCHFLO 3D) or so many different keyboard RESCO, TOUCHPAL etc

N95 can only install theme. I mean if we want iphone UI in N95 we can only have iphone wallpaper and different icon and different color. and that 's all. it doesnt scroll, you cant flick it, So it that what you so proud of?

Yes i have N95

Guys, please don't make this another Omnia Vs. XPhone competition thread, obviously it is not intended to be like this.

Let's put our thought together on what really needs to be RECTIFIED! not new features or anything else, just removing annoying stuff.

My initial thoughts would be:

1. Ringtone: Samsung typical, low for 2 seconds and then normal volume afterwords, very annoying and not justifiable.

2. Key lock while on call, at least give us the option to change the time and activate/deactivate, or worst case if I deactivate don't activate again!

3. Give more control and options over sound gateway, don't send all sounds to A2DP or wired-headset as soon as it is connected

4. Ability to customize / add / remove widgets.

5. Please oh please give us the option to update our phone through a worldwide updater like ALL other phone makers!!!

I'm sure there is more, but this is what I can think of right now.

I know there are third party tweaks, registry hacks or free/paid software that might so any of the mentioned stuff, but sometimes you want something working out of the box, why do we have to suffer right?

@ samjuan: exactly what I ment.

@tarik:

Your file does not solve the "Ringtone: Samsung typical, low for 2 seconds"

@chokia:

I bought a mobile for about 400,- Euros, why should I buy additional software for basic (pocketpc)phone features? How much have you payed for VoiceCommand & Co?

I don´t want to cook roms or soups, I just want to use my phone as advertised.

My N95 repeats the voice announcement, can Voicecommand do this after the first announcement in the "Samsung typical low volume" at the beginning thats hardly to hear in the pocket/bag?

AFAIC, my omnia now is perfect, for me at least, why? because i bought an omnia, and i want an omnia, if i want an n95, i would have bought an n95, not omnia, if i like nokia, then i wouldnt have bought samsung. if you want a vehicle that flies, then dont buy a car, consider helicopter or plane.

omnia has its problems when 1st released, at least after a few months, almost all problems are fixed, maybe there are still some.

For me,

Most annoying feature is finger scrolling.

It is to easy to select an object when just trying to scroll

They should have a section of the screen that cannot select an object but just allows you to scroll

Say about a fingers width down the side of the screen that is for finger scrolling not selection.

Not a slide bar or anything the screen should remain visually the same but just have the scroll section mapped not to select.

How many phone no's have I selected when scrolling through searching for name. I now don't use Samsung phone book anymore.

Otherwise phone is all good most other things can be modded out but not this one

Just my pennys worth..... B)

about #5, what i would like is a file updater that can be copied to our phone's "My Storage" or "Storage Card" then can be run from there, I believe the cases of bricked omnia will be lessen if the variable factor of windows OS and USB drivers will be removed from the equation.

Voice Command is not basic feature in pocketpc infact it is very advance compare the one in N95

Read: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/en-...-tutorials.mspx

People buy pocket PC because of plethora ways to customize and the possibility beyond what a normal symbian smartphone can do.

If you choose to buy phone as advertised than dont buy pocket pc , stick to symbian or better still sony ericsson.

You put all these "Most annoying features" of Omnia as if there is no solution. That's really pathetic. It's like when there was no accelerometer in N95, nobody knows how to activate it and had to wait for nokia to release firmware, same goes to flashlite 3, nobody can do anything, all wait for nokia. wait wait wait

Its a pocket PC now, you either buy software or get a pirated one or tweak it, hack it. if thats something that you do not want to do, then buy dumbphones.

So here we are: Everybody wants something different in/out/modified or something. In my opinion Samsung did a good job on the official rom. If you want something different, you have a huge variety of freeware/shareware/commercial software for extending the Phone to your needs. You can't make everybody happy (as this thread clearly shows)!

But one thing would be really cool indeed: an extendable widget system for homescreen. As far as I know Samsung promised to integrate that, so maybe we could remind them a bit B)

sony will be releasing an SDK for its panel, maybe samsung can release an SDK too for widget.

why do you all act so defensive about such topics? the man is putting his thoughts together for a better experience, the least we can do is do nothing and not act all emotional unnecessarily

Seems that the sense of this topic got lost for some here B)

My intention was not a flame parade on me or an N95 (sure, its not perfect, thats why I switched to Omnia) but some usefull and constructive efforts on my and other Users Omnias.

I like my Omnia, but there are still things to improve.

If you like cooking, having low volume ringtones and pirated or 14days software I will respect that, but sorry, for me it could be better, especially on a non dumb phone like the omnia.

Btw. - VoiceCommand is included in some HTCs (yes, why I didnt bought an HTC or an self speaking Stormtrooperhelmet ...)

Agreed with the scrolling problem, that is by far one of the most annoying bugs. You scroll but you cannot stop it properly and you end up selecting something that you did not want.

Also it's incredibly annoying that you can't listen to audio files and use the samsung keyboard at the same time. Well...that is to say that you can, but the keyboard responds so slowly its incredibly aggravating. I can listen to music AND use the camera at the same time, with absolutely no lag, but with the simple keyboard there is problems?

I'm really sorry, if you feel offended by my posting, this was not my intention at all! I respect your effort for a better firmware, the only thing I wanted to point out is, that it is very difficult to agree in the feature set a phone must have. But sure, you are right, things could be better (thats true for all times and all things, of course B) ). So maybe you could start an survey so we find out the details most people are interested in?

My list of annoyances

1. insensitive screen especially in the middle.

I really have to presee very hard to get action. Although there was some improvement in Hj9, still compared to my previous device (Tytn II) it is lackluster. Plus, it has now shows blue streaks when I press with some pressure.

2. Lack of bubdled games that utilize g-sensor.

I am sure I can list more.....

+10000

and again, we want bugs and annoying stuff to get fixed or rectified, not really interested in new features that were not advertised in the beginning.

I believe, the problem is actually not about the performance of Voice Command or what other commercial/shareware apps exist. We all know that smartphones/pocket pc's have the main advantage of 3rd party apps. But, it's the cost that causes the problem there... I have an Omnia _and_ an iphone 3g and I love them both. But, before buying them, I couldn't make my mind up to choose between the two. Everybody said something about what the iPhone "didn't have"... So, here we are, now talking about the things that Omnia (or WM phones in general) don't have...

It's very annoying to be forced to pay more, after having spent a huge amount of money on a phone, just to get some very basic features you'd expect from a very standard phone.

It's also very right that no combination can make everyone happy, except making it fully customizable. Someone might like the sound low at startup and others may not. So, why not make a setting applet for that? Same goes for the screen lock during call, screen sensitivity etc.

I guess, Samsung can make this phone much closer to perfect with a few more things:

1) More customization options (my picks are for screen lock during call, incoming call voice, screen sensitivity and more animations for portrait-landscape transtition)

2) Reducing the number of "forced" apps that sit on our storage, some use it and some don't. Samsung should be offering these are extra apps, within the CD and online (especially for Google Maps and Shozu, also maybe even for Opera)

3) Consolidating the updater for all devices worldwide and opening it to every customer. Someone in France have the option to update the device with the latest firmware himself, but I can't do it here in Turkey although I might have bought it before and even for a higher price. I feel cheated and unhappy here. (I don't want to turn my newly-wed phone to service center and wait for return, I want to use it now)

I hope I don't add to a flamewar, I was using an E61 before the omnia and I still keep it and like it. But, I liked the touchscreen and looks of the Omnia and so I bought it. Just want to get what I paid for; a better phone and a better PDA.

NOTE: By the way, why is WM touchscreen phones are called pocket pc's and others (like symbian etc.) are smartphones? I know many things an N95/E61 bla bla. can do much better than any WM phone, and some others where WM doesn't even accept competition. They're all the same, smartphones or pda's for me, with different features and different customers.
