Wifi and contract data switching? Not to mention GPS ports...

I know there are ways to prevent the omnia from using data serices such as 3g/gprs etc but I'm confused about how I get it to use the right connections at the right time.

For instance:

I have WIFI set up as WORK network and I was able to browse the web via my home wifi when the 'Browser Conection' setting was set to use WORK to connect. So far so good but this kept resetting itself to connect to data services etc. I found the way to stop this is in Connections> Connections> Advanced selecting WORK for anything to which automatically connects to the internet.

OK, so now I can browse the web and it connects every time at home via wifi. Great.

The problem is that I cannot then use the phone to get my emails etc unless I am at home, and I will obviously use my desktop/laptop there.

How can I tell it to use GPRS for everything EXCEPT web browsing? I don't want to have to p1ss around changing all the settings for how this connects when I move from A-B - it's ridiculous. I want the phone to try the home wifi network first (or other open ones it might find), then if it's not found a connection via wifi, to connect to the relevant data service instead. Surely there must be some means of automatically managing it like this?

The next question I have is that when trying to connect using my provider's data service, the phone says "connecting via GPRS" or similar, but then connects to an Edge network. Is this normal? (am in the UK).

Aside from anything else, it connects to Edge and stays connected, but will not actually download/upload any data so it fails when you try to do anything with this service, but still actually stays connected. I think this may be an issue with my provider giving out wrong settings or a dodgy service so I will ask them, but I thought I would ask all the same, in case there is something I can check myself.

I love this phone as it's such a great piece of kit, but getting it set up to behave itself is becoming a real pain in the hoop. I will persevere as I'm sure it's do-able, but it's SOOO annoying that you know it can do all these functions, yet actually telling it do go ahead and do it all successfully seems to require the brain power of Steven Hawking! B)

Don't even get me started on GPS - I have got GPS Gate, Portsplitter etc, but I'll be damned if I can suss out the settings to make Navigon work. It did do once before I did the firmware upgrade but I cannot get it to find the GPS device now. Does anyone have the settings for it please?

I have got IGO8 to work however - I downloaded the quickgps file, and IGO8 connected straight away to the satellites, so why won't other stuff play ball? I have got co-pilot live6 on my XDA still, and I was going to transfer it to the Omnia, but I don't know that I can be bothered going through the deactivation process etc to re-register it without even knowing if it will work on my new satanic phone!

And breathe! B)

Sorry folks. Rant over, but if anyone can help in particular re' the connection management I'd be extremely grateful. Cheers!

Not sure if there is such a thing as a auto-switcher. However will keep my eyes open. Will need something like that soon myself.

Btw, do you have a link and info about that quickgps app ?

Thanks

Bah - that's a shame. It's definitely needed!

Sorry mate, when I say the quickgps I meant the built in AGPS download thing - couldn't remember the name of it when I posted. Sorry for the confusion!

I'm wondering if I get all the data services set up & working properly, if Paul's turn off GPRS cab will work for what I want. Surely if I tell it to use data services for stuff that automatically connects, and then switch that off with his app, it should then default to wifi no?

I presume that's the point of it. Hopefully will pop in today to get proper settings that work from my provider....

Paul's could I suppose, but not used it yet. Hoping that a more transparent soloution will come along.

I recall reading a while back that certain voip clients can behave seamless by using whatever connection is available at the time of connection and then switching to the next available as needed. If they can do it so surely the connection manager within the Omnia should be able to.

No worries about the gps. Btw, there is an app named quickgps. hehe

Take care.

Paul's app certainly improves this issue, but the problem I still have is that the selected network connection under 'Browser Connection' keeps changing of its own accord and it's infuriating!!

How can I get this to stay set as my Work network (ie wifi)?

The 'recommended' way this should work, is that everything should connect via 'The Internet/My ISP' or whatever yours is called, leaving ' My Work Network' just for stuff like VPN, WAP sites and MMS.

Technically, all WM devices are 'connection aware' and should prioritise the connection device automatically. So, if a WiFi connection is available, it will use that before a GSM/3G connection. If the WiFI drops, then it can just drop over to the GSM seamlessly.

I say 'Technically' advisedly! Most of the time it works fine; occasionally if a data stream is in progress when the WiFI is turned on, it won't drop the GSM connection unless the browser is restarted.

Connection type- G and E are both parts of the GSM network. Edge is a faster version of GPRS and can be nearly as fast as 3G. 3G and HSDPA use a higher speed and different frequency spectrum. 3G signals are weaker and have poorer persistence through obstacles, but coverage is improving all the time. As long as the phone's Band setting is set to 'Auto', it will connect at the fastest available method, showing G, E, 3G or H as appropriate.

Thanks for the reply & the info. B)

I wonder why I cannot get mine to behave in this way then. I'll have to write down all the settings for the various connections (since my phone company actually provide incorrect details for the omnia that don't work!!!) then try setting it up this way.

Is there any other way of stopping the chosen browser connection from changing itself 'at will' though? I really wish there was as it would solve the problem for me.

And is it just me or is the wifi really weak on the omnia? It keeps losing my home wlan even though all my other devices are fine.

Curious if there is an update to this issue. I'm a recent Omnia convert, and the only thing that kills me is that I have to dig 3 or 4 menus deep to switch from 3g to Wifi and vice-versa.

Is there a small app that you could put on your homescreen that you can tap to switch from one connection to another?

Thanks.
