Do you use "skin" that uses custom fonts? See if the font looks familiar somewhere in your other softwares. If it does, then try to find solutions from the software's developer or the skinner, because somehow their custom fonts interfering your phone's phone pad & contacts.

Here is a quick solution to have the old fonts back. Be advised, that this might not be "friendly" to the above-mentioned software. Look inside your Windows folder for some .ttf files. The original font files should be cour.ttf, tahoma.ttf, and tahomabd.ttf. Other fonts, one of them might be the small italics that you mentioned. Give a new extension for all of them (except the original 3), for example, .ttf1. Do a soft reset, & your phone pad & contacts should have the old fonts back. If you want, you may delete all the .ttf1 files now.
