Can connect to GPS but not start it

I have installed the gps activator hacks. This has allowed me to us Efficasoft GPS Utilities. However gpsvp and terracrosser recognize that the gps is there but I can't figure out how to get these programs to work by themselves. If I open Efficasoft and start the GPS in that program and leave it running, this allows me to use the gps in gpsvp and terracrosser. Is there a way to start the GPS some other way?
