Microsoft will release IE6 to Omnia

As much as i like my Opera Mobile now with flashlite 3.1 (youtube flv native support) I think IE6 suits better with windows mobile due to

1. Activesync still sync Favorites to IE not opera, it's a real hassle to import PC IE favorites to Opera Mobile. It doesnt synch if you have new fav on your PC.

2. Some apps (WMP, PocketIRC, etc) will only open link with IE and not Opera even after you set in opera settings and hack the registry.

3. Opera Mobile very "slippery" it is very difficult to browse and click buttons or link,

4. Embedded video on Opera(youtube, wmv, may misaligned and dont display properly especially when it is embedded on the right of the internet page.

I hope mobile IE6 will not have these issues. And i also hope people from chinese forum will extract and cab it for all of us.

China Mobile first to get mobile IE 6

China Mobile will be the first operator globally to bring Microsoft's latest mobile browser release to its customers.

Scott Rockfeld, Microsoft's director of Windows Mobile, mobile communications business, told ZDNet Asia over the phone Tuesday, China Mobile intends to make Internet Explorer (IE) 6 for Windows Mobile available to its customers on its Samsung Omnia phones.

Rockfeld said Microsoft intends to announce the China Mobile partnership today at Mobile Asia Congress being held in Macau.

China Mobile was chosen as the first operator to get mobile IE6 because the software giant hopes to tap the vast growth in the number of new mobile users in the country, Rockfeld said.

"Our target is not to convert existing users of the competing phones like the iPhone or Google's Android. We want to grow faster than the market.

"We want to have users in [emerging markets] get their first online experience with Windows Mobile," he said.

Microsoft last week released emulator images for IE6 for Windows Mobile phones on its Web site, touting the mobile browser as its first "full-fledged" mobile browser capable of rendering richer content.

Rockfeld said Microsoft has brought the "full rendering engine of IE6 to the phone", which is expected to deliver a surfing experience on the mobile that is closer to that of the desktop. Users can also view rich elements such as flash "straight from the browser", he said.

IE6 for the desktop was released in 2001, and the current release is version 8 beta 2.

China Mobile is carrying a customized version of the Omnia running on Windows Mobile. Rockfeld said it has tweaked the phone to allow users access to the carrier's services such as e-mail from the device's home screen.

I am really looking forward to this as it means I will no longer have to choose between the widget today screen and watching flash in Opera B)

The other pleasing aspect of this is that it shows that Microsoft and Samsung are still pushing the development of the Omnia forward (rather than letting it sit there with the same features). I wonder whether this means that we will get a WM6.5 update for our devices??

I think I'll send you mine in the end :) (I'm getting tired of it and the iPhone games are way too charming, really)
