Guest Jokes On You Posted November 23, 2008 Report Posted November 23, 2008 If your phone is not charging via usb(you are not getting the red charge light) this is a hardware malfunction and you should get your phone fixed.
Guest dutchencoder Posted November 23, 2008 Report Posted November 23, 2008 If your phone is not charging via usb(you are not getting the red charge light) this is a hardware malfunction and you should get your phone fixed. Is this true? How do you know this? My Omnia works perfect, accept for the usb charging thing. Tell us how you know this to be true.
Guest deadphill Posted November 23, 2008 Report Posted November 23, 2008 Yea I think to make a statement like this requires some information to back it up with. Cheers Phill
Guest Jokes On You Posted November 24, 2008 Report Posted November 24, 2008 Yea I think to make a statement like this requires some information to back it up with. Cheers Phill Ok here is the info. First recieved my phone and it charged via USB no problem. Then I accidently dropped my phone and when I went to plug my phone into my pc and it didnt charge. Since I dropped it right on the edge I figure when it knocked something loose. My phone still charges fine on a regular charger so there must have been something that happened when I dropped it to make it stop working.
Guest Ingvarr Posted November 25, 2008 Report Posted November 25, 2008 For many people with USB charge problem, they actually get a USB red charge light, and phone actually indicates charging, but its just not actually charging.
Guest finaldestiny Posted November 25, 2008 Report Posted November 25, 2008 For many people with USB charge problem, they actually get a USB red charge light, and phone actually indicates charging, but its just not actually charging. I gathered this as well, which would indicate to me a software problem.
Guest 3shirts Posted November 25, 2008 Report Posted November 25, 2008 For many people with USB charge problem, they actually get a USB red charge light, and phone actually indicates charging, but its just not actually charging. It seems your issue is very different to most people reporting the issue. For most it has never worked but all the signs indicate it is. Yours presumably doesn't even show any sign of charging (the little plug icon or red LED) becasue it is physical damage.
Guest Mysterious Stranger Posted November 25, 2008 Report Posted November 25, 2008 Not having an Omnia I can't test this, but with my other samsungs ( an i300, and i320, an i600, an i607 and an i617 - all smarthpones not PPC ) they had to be put into 'mass storage mode' so that the PC sees them as a USB drive to enable the USB charging. It may be the same with the omnia. M.S

Guest Mig-L - Bell Posted November 25, 2008 Report Posted November 25, 2008 My Omnia charges great on USB... Takes about 4 and a bit hours to fully charge...
Guest awarner (MVP) Posted November 25, 2008 Report Posted November 25, 2008 Since I dropped it right on the edge I figure when it knocked something loose. My phone still charges fine on a regular charger so there must have been something that happened when I dropped it to make it stop working. Unlikely as the charging circuit is the same mains or USB. If the battery gets too low then charging by USB could easily be an issue due to the limited current a USB port has. USB is generally 500mA but they can be much less depending on the motherboard so it could be the PC you are using is not man enough for the job. Your mains charger will probably be around 1A which is twice the power as USB.
Guest Mysterious Stranger Posted November 25, 2008 Report Posted November 25, 2008 Unlikely as the charging circuit is the same mains or USB. Not true for samsung devices. While mini USB equipped phones only have 1 charge route either via USB or mains charger Samsung devices that use 20 odd pins have several routes. For example, the i617 that I believe uses the same 20 pin connector as the omnia accepts +5v over 18, 19 or 20 to charge yet the USB cable is only wired +5v to pin 18. Looking directly at a genuine charger compared to a genuine USB cable shows that the mains charger uses pin 20 not pin 18 to provide +5v. So you could quite easily damage one of the +5v pins (18, 19 or 20) and not be able to charge your device a certain way yet still have it able to charge via an alternative method. Sams as the old 22 pin foxconn connector used in iPaqs / early XDA's et al. Multiple charging lines there too, not all used for all cables. M.S
Guest DMRO Posted November 25, 2008 Report Posted November 25, 2008 And that must be why I can't charge my Omnia using a USB carlighter adapter. I probably have to buy a specific car charger for the omnia!
Guest Street northeast Posted November 25, 2008 Report Posted November 25, 2008 And that must be why I can't charge my Omnia using a USB carlighter adapter. I probably have to buy a specific car charger for the omnia! are you using the supplied data cable? I found i couldn't charge my omnia from my usb solar charger, xbox360 or Ps3 with the data cable, so i bought a retractable usb charger cable on ebay and it works, also look at the pins (side that connects to mobile) of the data cable and the wall charger, they are different, i suspect that the data cable is made so it will never give a proper charge.

M.S this would reinforce why many people with USB desktop cradles don't receive a charge on their phones, my car charger is a genuine samsung and works fine, but the desktop charger not so. I just use it as a stand now, and connect the original charger to it.
Guest balles Posted November 25, 2008 Report Posted November 25, 2008 are you using the supplied data cable? Same symptoms here. As you say, pinout for charging is different. This is the key why many people has problems with USB charging. If you take the original USB cable and you just connect it to a power source (no data), omnia won't charge (being more precise the red led turns on during one second, then off). And this is very annoying because I have a portable USB charger that I cannot use. If anybody has an iphone, you can do the test: connect the USB cable to the wall charger and see what happens. Many people reports that setting omnia to mass storage the issue is solved. I think that we are just masking the real reason. My guess is that omnia refuses to charge via the USB cable if it does not detect a data source. Setting activesync it needs to be identified by a Windows computer with activesync installed to charge. In my linux box, for instance, it does not charge in activesync mode (not detected device in linux) but it charges in mass storage mode (detected as an external disk by the computer). Mass storage is "nearly" always detected by computers, whereas activesync needs the software to be installed, so the probability of charging is higher in mass storage mode. So... I think that this is software issue that Samsung should resolve. At least, this is my conclusion according to my own experience...

Guest balles Posted November 25, 2008 Report Posted November 25, 2008 You're right, figured that out too B) I'm afraid this is not the reason. Computer's USB connectors always delivers power. See some "USB" gadgets (in Spanish but with images)... Do you think they are detected as a device or as a drive?? B) http://www.pixelydixel.com/2005/11/zapatillas-usb.html http://espegizmo.com/2007/10/17/usb/mini-e...de-bebidas-usb/ http://espegizmo.com/2006/11/24/usb/cojn-calentador-usb/ The key is trying to charge the omnia with a voltage transformer with a USB female connectino, it won't charge!

I have the USB powered slippers! Deal Extreme ROCKS! Anyway, we are not saying the USB does not provide current along pin 18 - it does. However USB is *nominally* 100mA current until the device ID's itself that it can take a higher current. 100mA is not enough to charge the handset. It needs to trigger 500mA - in the samsung's case by putting into mass storage mode. http://www.powermanagementdesignline.com/s...cleId=196902337 The samsung USB cable is wired to +5v power onto pin 18. So using this cable with a USB mains adapter will not work as no device ID is sent down the data pins of the USB cable to trigger charging mode. You may want to try this with the handset in mass storage mode with the mains adapter. However, third party sync'n'charge cables DO work as they also tie pins 19 and 20 to +5v to enble charging at the same time, so will work with USB mains adapters without setting the mass storage mode. This is exaclty the same issue with the HTC designed iPaq using the 22 pin foxconn connector. However, HP/HTC provided a software override in the power options of these devices to 'enable USB charging' so it is a mystery why samsung do not... M.S
Guest pidsw Posted November 26, 2008 Report Posted November 26, 2008 I could be missing something, but here is my experience so far with USB charging: - At one point it did not work. - Upgraded ROM, Hard Reset, Etc. - Ever since then USB charging has worked. I can't remember which ROM was the turning point, but I think that it was around HI1.

Without an omnia I can't really help, although there was recently a second wm6 rom for i617 published that I'll have a look at. M.S
Guest cici Posted November 27, 2008 Report Posted November 27, 2008 Using the supplied USB data cable, Omnia will recharge completely, let's say from 40% to 100% in ~4h. The recharging will start automatically ONLY after Omnia has been seen by the computer via ActiveSync!!! So, using the USB cable with a car adapter with USB output, definitely will not charge Omnia, because the logic signal that validates the charging process is missing in this case.
