Another GPS topic I'm afraid.

I've been trying desperately to get the GPS working on my omnia but have not succeeded as of yet.

I've tried GpsGate and port splitter with igo8 and have yet to get it it recognise my location, it seems to find up to around 8 satellites but they always stay red and it refuses to recognise my location as anywhere other than L'Hotel de ville, Paris. I have tried downloading xtra data and it updates the file in the device folder but that doesn't seem to have any effect. I can get google maps to find my location over wifi but it can't connect to any satellites either.

GPS Test gets a fix in 1 dimension but never actually connects to any satellites despite the fact it seems to find them.

I've only tried testing in London, however the building round here aren't particularly high rise so I can't see that that's an issue. How long should I realistically have to wait for it to fix to satellites? I may have been too impatient but it's getting pretty tedious now.

Thanks in advance,

Sam

I tried MioMap 3.3 and it was great but I did not know how to use it! B)

Give it a shot.

Hi,

First of all, have you ever been correctly positionned before with your omnia?

I think that you should first try to position with a light GPS software. I recommend you CE Monitor : http://www.gpspassion.com/fr/articles.asp?id=6&

I will give you my configuration details and the procedure you should follow:

1. Settings, External GPS, GPS Program Port: COM3; GPS hardware Port: COM9, Baud rate: 57600; and select Manage GPS automatically

2. On GPS Gate,

a. set as input COM Port 3, Baud rate at 57600 and leave the rest of parameters as default.

b. for the output, choose "Virtual COM Port / NMEA", choose port 1 and finally choose "allow all NMEA".

c. finally, open the input port.

3. Launch CE Monitor (you will see it as "GPS Monitor" in programs).

a. Go to tools, port settings. You could see several times the error "Couldn't find value!", just ignore them. Finally, choose NMEA, Port "bizVSerial1 COM1" and 57600 as baud rate.

b. Tools, Connect

c. View, signal level. The fix is indicated whenever some satellites become green.

This is the lightest way I have found to test the GPS with GpsGate. You should have a fix in less than one minute (less than 5/10 seconds for me if the sky is clear) if there are no buildings around you.

Once you get the fix, you should consider what happens with igo.

Concerning XTRA, it is not necessary to get a fix, it makes a time difference, but if you are patient enough you should get it without it.

Hope it helps!

PS: Another solution is to use your GPS just while being at L'Hôtel de Ville at Paris B) (English humor)

Thanks for the response. I tried it all, and it picks up between 3 and 11 satellites (most inconsistently, but 2,12 and 13 are fairly consistent) and on one occasion sat '2' went blue, but after about 15 seconds it went red again. I've come back inside because it's freezing outside.

I don't know what the issue is.

Yes, I forgot to tell you something. With XTRA, you usually have all satellites positions, so you may see them as red even if you get no data from them.

Once data is correctly received from a satellite, it becomes blue. At the end, whenever there are enough blue satellites, the position can be determined and you will see green satellites.

What you experience make me think that you don't have a good reception and I would say that you are not in a good environment. At home, for instance, I experience the same behaviour you are describing.

You should try in a clearer place (if you are in a balcony it won't work).

I see, well the fact one managed to go blue leaves me with some hope then. I'll go sit in the middle of hyde park later and see what happens. Weather dependant.

Problem solved, managed to get a fix in 5 seconds in the middle of hyde park, weird how much difference 0.1 miles and some 7 story buildings makes.

Thanks for the help.

you need to make sure there's no object above your head when holding any gps device, because it needs to scan for NWSE satellites to know your proper coordinate.

Any?

I get 9 Sats sitting in my family room 15ft from the window with both my phone and external BT GPS.

I don't have a sunroof in the house last I looked.

My truck GPS however loses its way going under a drive thru awning.
