Updating a debranded Omnia with an official ROM Update from samsungmobile.....

If like me, you in the early launch of these Omnia updated the ROM to one of the many found on this site, maybe more than one like me (and i'm not complaining, many thanks for all support on these from all of us), but now wish to revert back to official ROMs now the latest official versions are downloadable, then read on:

Unfortunately, i as of yet cant update to the official Vodafone version and i believe i know why. The Official update tool seems to looks at a few things, one being the ROM SW version i.e XXHH1/ACHH1 (original vodafone) and the other being preconfiguration settings, this means that changing the preconfig alone or in conjunction with the custom naming of the ROM i.e last part ACHH1 in the registry will not work, But what you can do is as follows, this wont allow you to update the branded version but will be an official one:

Take the leaked DXHH1 ROM and update your phone, then change the precofig settings to Philippines, then run the official DXHJ1 update!

So thats the trick but there's a few question you may ask one being why! revert back to an old HJ1 ROM, well whilst doing some checking on installed later ROMs (including these custom roms), with the following key code entry: *#197328640# - i.e being the root debug menu.

It was possible to check the actual SW version and i've noticed that even though these roms are showing a higher rom i.e DTHJ6, the actual sw version was lower, I cant remember actual version shown but was not the same, which leaves me to wonder; are these actual updates or just tweaked versions with the names changed in official order, on the other hand maybe it was just my phone and as a result of multiple updates being applied but it would be interesting to see if anyone else sees this?

On from this if anyone knows how to change the rom name, then this is crucial to this thread, this info should allow a custom rom to be built with the sw version which reflects that looked for in the official update process, which can be use to pre update the phone prior to the official update being applied.

Hey there,

you are absolutely right.....

I have Pauls 03 rom which is DTHJ9

But when I look at SW VERSION with debug menu it says

SW VERSION i900XXHJ1

HW VERSION MP 0.601

How about that??

Perhaps these roms are not latest updates at all but as you say tagged versions?

Can anyone explain??

One thing, Isnt it possible to restore the phone back to ORIGINAL factory settings, making it Voda branded software again?

if you flash with an official vodafone rom, it will be branded again.

follow iceman's instructions if it won't let you straight off.

doesnt work mate... icemans instructions will only work if you were to go for an official non branded phillipino rom.

Yeah his instructions are to remove the branded software but even he wants the branded software back B)

Thats right, i'm also on a voyage of discovery to find out how we can get the official vodafone ACHJ2 version on the phone, but as i cant do that i really wanted to just get an official version back on my Omnia as have lots of issues with these non official ones which dont seem to be proper updates (though this may reference the phone part and not the pda part which would then reflect true).

Like i've said above i think getting ACHH2 back on will be possible if we can somehow rename one of the unofficial ROMs from this site to XXHH1/ACHH1 then set the preconfig to UK so the new update will think its overwriting a vodafone ROM immage. BUT i have no idea how to do this!

Reason i've said use the Philippines ROM from samsung is that its prefixed with DX (i.e Singapore is DZ, UK is XX etc.), and to upgrade to an official samsung ROM you need a ROM image on the phone with an earlier alpha i.e HH1, but still prefixed with the same the country code i.e DX, DZ, XX, now the only ones available on here from Secany in English are DX (Philippines) or DT (Australia), and Australia was not available when i wrote this.

ok so this is what i did....

1. Download the update

2. Open the update using a binary editor

3. Find i900DX, change i900DX to suit for your Software Version, i.e. i900XX.

4. Update normally.

this took me ages to do as i couldn't find the right i900DX in the exe.

any trouble message me

OK I've never used a binary editor before but am willing to have a go, although if I succeed don't expect a Vista guide Will!! As I use Vista 64, and I wouldn’t risk trying to update my phone using it due to incompatibility with just about everything! However be my guest to try yourself though.

What I would ask Midgo do you still have the copy of the file you re-coded, could you post this on rapidshare or megaupload etc. to save us the agro of creating this file, or maybe post some details on how to edit the file for us binary editing novices, I’m planning on using the free 'Neo Binary Editor' if possible?.

Also did you recode the Vodafone official update or one of the DX Secany ROMs from this site and then update with the official ROM?

Cheers buddy B)

ez all,

i thought a hex editor might be the way to go but couldnt be arsed to do it myself.

tbh honest though guys... from what i have been reading on the vodafone forums... even their latest HJ1 update still has blank screen of death issues and auto answer problems.

Im now running the DXHK2 firmware (unofficial but stock update ie/not tampered with), and it is the best ROM i have used so far. i think im going to stick with it for a while.

Well XP Guide should be ok too, But my omnia faulty so I might be returning it tommorow B)! And Getting it exchanged, if they cant I am not waiting 2 weeks till they send it for repair, I will just cancel the thing, Im still in the 14day Cooloff Period!
