Need help - Network Icon

HI, I have i900 from singapore. I am using this omnia with Fido network in Canada. According to the manual, there is a 'network icon' display at the status bar, but mine always display 'x' instead of 3G, E, or G. I am also using Kaiser and Kaiser always displays appropriate icons even though I am not using the data session.(according to the manual it should display network icon when the 3G, E, G network is available). What is wrong with my phone?

P.S. I have just been to Korea. In Korea I can see 3G network icon all the time. Can anybody please tell me what is going on?
