Guest foofam77 Posted December 8, 2008 Report Posted December 8, 2008 (edited) How to configure Wi-Fi to surf internet at free public wi-fi spots ? I have disabled my GPRS function using NoData, ...hence my settings for IDEAS MMS, GPRS and Singtel are all disabled. In other words, my 3G is disabled as well... I have tried connecting to wi-fi at free wi-fi spots. The phone shows Wi-fi is "Available" and "Free Public Wifi" at Connecting stage. However for a good 5 mins or more, it keeps showing "Connecting" which i feel shdnt be the case. I have not performed any change in configuration to the IE, Opera Browser or Wi-Fi connections that come default with Omnia. Does anyone have any resolution? thank you Edited December 8, 2008 by foofam77

Try this hit the connectivity menu at the top then settings and go to wifi. Search for a network and then select the one you want and hit connect.

I do not want to surf via GPRS as it will incur telco charges. As such, i am looking to surf using wi-fi, which is provided free at some cafe joints here in Singapore. I was able to connect to some of such free wi-fi. After which, i launched IE and Opera Mobile. However they fail to load up internet pages. Do i need to configure any internet settings in IE and Opera Mobile, such as internet proxy, IP address etc? thanks

Guest bobobird Posted December 10, 2008 Report Posted December 10, 2008 anyone to help me on this? thanks since you wont be using any mobile data, try setting the 2 network connections, browser connection and within opera/setting all to "Work"
Guest deanos1 Posted December 10, 2008 Report Posted December 10, 2008 i have a similar problem, i can load pages from home wifi, but on public wifi connections it either hangs on "conecting" or says connected but no pages load. any thoughts?
Guest adzrm Posted December 10, 2008 Report Posted December 10, 2008 sure are free wifi and not with login/credentials ??
Guest deanos1 Posted December 11, 2008 Report Posted December 11, 2008 if the wireless connection detected has no padlock icon shown next to the signal strength on the wireless network config screen, its unsecured, or free ,right? it says connecting then after a while says connected, why wont pages load? this happens even with connections showing three or four bars.
Guest sys_error Posted December 12, 2008 Report Posted December 12, 2008 If there is no way out for your WiFi settings, perhaps a HARD RESET can solve your problem. Yours is not 1st case. I have come across Omnia behaving this way and a simple hard reset solve every darn things.
Guest adzrm Posted December 12, 2008 Report Posted December 12, 2008 but no lock sign doesn't mean u can use it for free.... it works if is an home wifi ap but usual public ones bring you to a login page, but they are shown as"unsecure" wifi spots. for example t mobile spots are this way
Guest Kendle Posted December 12, 2008 Report Posted December 12, 2008 I come across this all the time in my travels. As the server is always called Free Public wi-fi, one would assume that it is free; I have always managed to connect to the server using many of the latest roms, but I can never access a web page. All very strange, as I assume it is in place for mobile phone users, to use for free.
