Guest Master_Axe Posted December 10, 2008 Report Posted December 10, 2008 Hey guys, my service provider charges me anytime i use the GPS on the Omnia. Is it capable of doing GPS like a real GPS system, or is it technically limited, so I need my service provider? The question is, is there a way around paying, i.e. if i insalled tomtom? Thank you, if the question's stupid, a link would be very nice, thank you!! Franz
Guest Mig-L - Bell Posted December 10, 2008 Report Posted December 10, 2008 Go to Settings/System/Enhanced GPS and disable XTRA... It will take longer to lock to the satellites but no more costs... Cheers
Guest Master_Axe Posted December 15, 2008 Report Posted December 15, 2008 Go to Settings/System/Enhanced GPS and disable XTRA... It will take longer to lock to the satellites but no more costs... Cheers Aha, cool, thanks. Now I need a new GPS program though, I suppose, instead of the one my provider installed? This is where I install Tomtom or whatever? Thank you!!!

Google maps, Microsoft live Search, etc.. all work with GPS functionality, however don't do the spoken turn-by-turn directions.

Just beware that Google Maps (now with street view!), Live Search Mobile all need an internet connection to download maps and info... and so a charge  For a proper navigator you can choose also Garmin XT, IGo 8, Tomtom, etc
Guest Master_Axe Posted December 16, 2008 Report Posted December 16, 2008 I used to use tomtom, so I'd prefer that. Say, this must've been asked like 20 times before, there a thread anyone can refer me to? Anywho, the way I understand it, XTRA has to be off for the whole thing to be free. Next, I need "GPS Gate" for any GPS software to work. And finally, I need tomtom (7?). All of which is free and i can just google?
Guest gravityz Posted December 17, 2008 Report Posted December 17, 2008 igo8 works without any extra programs like gpsgate. i used to be a tomtom fan but at the moment i am trying igo8 at first it needs to get used to but after that it is not so bad. please note none of this software is for free. you need to buy it. do not know how this works with software which is not for sale(like tomtom7) I used to use tomtom, so I'd prefer that. Guest Reuben (MY) Posted December 17, 2008 Report Posted December 17, 2008 i've tried all but still prefer Garmin XT till now due to its' feature my XTRA is enabled because when i disable and delete .bin file, Garmin not scanning for satellite, not even 1 sat found... it uses 3G connection, but once satellite signal become green, you may disconnect the 3G connection and start using it as pure GPS device.

BTW Garmin XT works perfectly with XTRA disabled. The time for the fix may be longer, especially the first one, but it definitely works. And with the latest ROMS (DXHK1-2-3) even the first fix is quite quick
Guest Enders Posted December 17, 2008 Report Posted December 17, 2008 Anyone know of a website from where I can download Garmin XT?
Guest scoiattolo Posted December 17, 2008 Report Posted December 17, 2008 Anyone know of a website from where I can download Garmin XT? You can download the program from Garmin website (including the basemap). But it will not work with the GPS and or a detailed map unless you have an activation code. Of course if you use Google you will easily find alternative ways to activate
Guest X-Ray A4T Posted December 17, 2008 Report Posted December 17, 2008 In South Africa they have bundled the Omnia with the Garmin software branded as Samsung Mobile Navigator and included free updates of the maps for life (mine or the phone I'm not sure ) It does work really well.
Guest Master_Axe Posted December 17, 2008 Report Posted December 17, 2008 (edited) argh. So I assume anyone using any gps software *didnt* pay, given you can find a key gen for practically any software? I hear I-GO is the only one that truly works perfectly, how can you get that to work? It free? Edited December 17, 2008 by Master_Axe
Guest bobobird Posted December 17, 2008 Report Posted December 17, 2008 (edited) None of the software mentioned here is free. I have tried Garmin XT, iGo v8.0.x and v8.3.x, Route 66 and MapKing. All work great with or without xtras. Only MapKing needs GpsGate. My personal preference is iGo 8.3.x but because I travel a lot and latest iGo maps cover only Europe and North America, I have to use also v8.0.x. @Master_Axe - truly works part is not strictly correct as far as 8.3.x is concened - lots of people have had problems. Probably not reading in the "correct" forums. haha Edited December 17, 2008 by bobobird

Guest X-Ray A4T Posted December 18, 2008 Report Posted December 18, 2008 Is downloading the XTRA data expensive where you are? Here in South Africa our bandwidth is not cheap and I pay R2.00 per MB which is about $0.20. Now the XTRA data file is 50KB or so which is about R0.10 or about $0.01. That in comparison to the size of the Google maps is tiny or if you are going to legally buy the Garmin software and maps (which I think Samsung should bundle everywhere like they do in SA) which is going to cost about $100.
Guest gravityz Posted December 18, 2008 Report Posted December 18, 2008 try moving around i did the same and thought it wass not working when i jumped in my car and drove around i had a lock within 2 minutes it seems like this gps needs movement while bt gpsses like it when you are stationary maybee it has something to do woth the sleep mode when you are stationary it might shut of maybe i'm still with DXHJ1 or maybe you tested without deleting xtra.bin file, whatever it is, i did switch on gps in open air and stood for 30 minutes with no movement in satallite signal  (xtra disable, bin file deleted, and rebooted) shall go for new rom before xmas as secany mentioned in his post...

If the phone can fix GPS without connection, that will force it. It will probably save you from other undesirable data connections, too. pp
Guest tensor123 Posted December 21, 2008 Report Posted December 21, 2008 Is there any drawing speed difference in Garmin xt, if i set baud rate from 4800 to 9600? Anyone experimented with baud settings?
Guest laplace Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 maybe i'm still with DXHJ1 or maybe you tested without deleting xtra.bin file, whatever it is, i did switch on gps in open air and stood for 30 minutes with no movement in satallite signal :( (xtra disable, bin file deleted, and rebooted) shall go for new rom before xmas as secany mentioned in his post... I loaded Garmin XT 5.0 yesterday and after a few changes here and there it locked onto 10 satellites in less than 2 mins :) . Check your settings.
Guest bpivk Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 Is there any drawing speed difference in Garmin xt, if i set baud rate from 4800 to 9600? Anyone experimented with baud settings? I'm really not sure what baud does to different programs but i noticed that igo likes 9600 and garmin works fine with 4800. Igo doesn't even connect on 4800. And some of my geocaching programs work on higher baud rates and not on lower ones. So it seems that every software prefers it's own settings.

IGO also works with 4800 baudrate. Got the sattelites immediately during first startup. Omnia isn't able to work faster than 4800 but it doesn't do any harm if you install it with 9600.
Guest Master_Axe Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 say, 2 minutes is an average time for the phone to fix its position, right?
Guest MrJoneswii Posted January 2, 2009 Report Posted January 2, 2009 I'm using IGO 8 without enhanced GPS (XTRA) and I get a fix pretty fast, 1 minute max. I'm really loving IGO 8

Omnia isn't able to work faster than 4800 but it doesn't do any harm if you install it with 9600. It doesn't work for me. 9600 is the only setting that enables satelites on Igo. I get a no gps found if i change it to 4800.
