New to the i900, need some advice

I just recently recieved my i900 and I'm really enjoying it. I've noticed a lot of the customization threads, and tweaks threads, but for someone new to this, I'm just looking for a few suggestions on how to get into the modding scene. First, is there a way to have tasks completely end when you close out of them? I am almost always forced to go to the task manager to kill programs after I've used them. Second, what are some programs I should have for making modifications? I imagine I need some software for my PC as well, and not just the phone.
