Now that the OMINA has been out for a reasonable period of time, and we are mostly quite familiar with all its quirks.

Perhaps those who cannot "cook" can help define what a CLEAN ROM should be like.

My definition would go something like this

Latest STABLE PDA and PHONE parts

(if different ROM achieve this, so be it).

Update included components -

NetCF 3.5

SqlCE 3.5

FlashLite (latest useable version) but also see note below.

Replace Dice game with the 2/5 dice selectable version.

Remove clutter -

Samsung pictures in My Pictures

MP3 files in \Application Data\PhotoSlides

MP3 files in \Windows

Help files

Customer Feedback

Error Reporting

Windows Update (optional, though there are never any).

Some registry tweaks

change the default agps server to "ServerAddress"="xtra1.gpsonextra.net" (the default one is reported to be closed)

change "TurnOffAutoDeploy" to 1 to disable auto opening of sip whenever something that requires input is opened.

Other suggestions from you guys

NO 3rd party apps/modules of any kind no matter how useful. Most can be installed to sdcard or my storage and should not occupy precious rom space. Furthermore, these do get updated so only entails more work for future ROM updates.

Most importantly, keep the Omnia identity and its default apps. Someone or other will be using them and not be too happy with having to switch even though the replacement could be 100 times better.

Note - Flashlite upgrading - personally I see no great benefit from doing so and breaking Widgets in the process.

That is all I can think of atm.

Comments / Suggestions ??

Thanks for reading.

About Flashlite , Taril has managed to make a ROM version where both 2.1 and 3.1 is installed so that you still have the Samsung Widgets and also flash support in Opera..which might be an idea to incoorporate in such a clean rom too.

I also agree that there should be no 3 party apps included.

I thought the 2/5 Dice Game was a new/3rd party app; it indeed looks a lot like the game shipped with the Omnia, but why would the sound be removed from an upgrade?

I wouldn't mind having the dice game removed completely from the ROM, as I generally store the games on my storage card anyway.

As for Windows Update and Error Reporting, you think you could keep them in but have them set to manual/disabled by default? They do come in handy whenever problems arise IMO.

I think they can remove podcast, rss, shouzu, photoslider, photoframe, touchplayer, samsung widget, samsung today 1, samsung today 2,

(all samsung apps )

and make the rom with just functional services like installing a Windows on a PC a clean version :) just to run and use, and you install what you want :(

my opinion:

BASE ROM:

*DXHK3 OR LATER

REMOVED:

-samsung today 1 & 2

-samsung widget

-samsung main menu and launcher

-chinese fonts

-digital frame

-podcasts

-rss reader

-shozu

-silverinbox

-streaming player

-windows update

-windows welcome center

-wm sample music, sample pictures

-wm themes (one left is enough for proper functioning i guess, everyone installs his own theme anyways)

-zoomer.exe

-flashlite 2

-net cf 2

ADDED:

+flashlite 3

+net cf 3

i kinda started to like google launcher and live launcher, i also love the default taskmanager (with the finger swipe shortcut), so i wouldn't want those to be left out.

Im with Barthlon, Clean ROM should come with 100MB or more free space.

Agree with most. Google Launcher should stay OFF - if this can't be loaded from Google (like Google Maps, whose latest version is not even ON the newest ROM HK3!!) then too bad, do without it. A shortcut for mail and install Google Maps is good enough.

Clean and Bare - good for me!

I like Digital frame (I'm probably the only one), but it's 1.7 Megs. Not WORTH it on my Rom!!

I'd drop Opera too. The newer beta is sweeter anyway. Although it takes up room when you install it (mostly doesn't go to the storage area, but to the device) At least it's not stored in the ROM image also.
