O2 told me GPRS would not work unless I went on contract. I changed the settings and got it to work on Pay as You Go. You can get the settings here http://www.mobileshop.org/usertech/gprssettings.htm

In an O2 shop they had a 'can't help ya mate' attitude but thought GPRS should work on PAYG SIM. Phoned support line and they said O2 only provides GPRS to WM users if they take a contract.

Not necessarily- O2 have always stated that they don't support Mobile Web connections on their PAYG service. They limit PAYG to the WAP APN, which doesn't provide full web access, and could be interpreted as not supporting full GPRS (OK, I know the WAP service uses GPRS/GSM!)

The workarounds in the WAP settings have been known for at least 4 years, but it is still technically against their T&C to use this, though I've not heard of anyone falling foul of it as yet.

The iPhone comes under a different set of T&C :rolleyes:

However, I understanfd that with the release of the iPhone and XDA Zest as PAYG devices, O2 are going to change to access restrictions, and allow full Mobile Web surfing. Hope this gets through to the CS people and shop staff, though somehow I doubt it will :)

I'll try this on a standard o2 payg sim tomorrow. Nothing saying you have to register it on your account as having an iphone before adding the bolt on.

Edit - the apn is listed as payandgo.o2.co.uk / vertigo / password under one of the not-so-helpful help files - and so back to my original comment, report them to trading standards....
