Understanding my GPRS/3G Data connections

Hey everyone. First off, thanks for a great forum. Excellent resources here, and friendly people.

I just bought a Touch HD, and I'm a bit new to these new web intensive phones. When my phone shows G up at the top, what exactly does this mean? I realise it is an established GPRS connection, but is that costing me money on my contract? Or is it just the amount of data transferred over the connection? For example I woke up this morning and the antenna symol had changed to G and it registered being connected for 4 hours, even though I am also connected to wifi.

Why does the connection not close itself? On my old phones, after a mms had been downloaded or I was finished browsing the net, the G symbol would turn back to an antenna.

Also, when I am in a 3G area, what will the symbol be? a "3"?

Any help for this newbie would be appreciated

Thanks!

Welcome to the site

Having the large G in the centre top of the screen only means you have GPRS available, there will only be a possible data transfer if you see the G above the signal bar.

Paul's post HERE show both G symbols.

Also when in and connected to a 3 signal it will indeed show 3 instead of G. You may need to look at your network settings incase you have your phone only looking for a 2G signal.
