Backlight Activation

The backlight on my Omnia comes out when a call is being received however it does not come on when I get text messages or email. Is this normal? I would like it to come on for sms/text messages and email also if possible because sometimes I would rather visually know I have gotten a message instead of a sound notification, for example at night when I keep the volume down. Is there a tweak for this?
