Guest liamwolf Posted December 27, 2008 Report Posted December 27, 2008 Okay, I'm new here and I plan to buy a Omnia. I just need a little information before I proceed. I plan to use the Omnia on AT&T and I know that it currently doesn't offer 3G. This is sad but not important because I have already made up my mind. I do however need the Edge settings, and any other settings that I will need when the package gets here. I've seen a little bit about the phone not being in English when it came to some people? I was wondering what shop do you think would be the best for a American buying the GSM version. Also! Is there anything I should know about? This will be my first unlocked phone, but you have to start somewhere.
Guest choihyun Posted December 27, 2008 Report Posted December 27, 2008 i bought mine off ebay from singapore and came to me in english but theres a thread here that lets you change where your phone is from and change to original or custom roms(thanks to all cookers). i am on t-mobile and i got the internet settings by "google" so im pretty sure you can find it for at&t this was my first winmo/smartphone. at one point there was a time where i just wanted my old simple samsung t-809 back lol. there is so much you can do on the omnia i wasnt used to it and it kinda overwhelmed me but i actually like it now. i just wish i could find a way to use the internet more because as of now it seems like im just wasting my money on the service. anyways congrats to your omnia purchase =D

I dislike not researching my products first and I still couldn't find the correct settings. I was wondering if my i617's settings would work with the phone, and I will try them when It gets here. I'm also wondering, being I couldn't find any information about the power cord, if my i617's power cord would work on the Omnia or if I should just try and find a converter.
Guest choihyun Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 they should all come with a converter
Guest meabigbaldguy Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 Right out of the box... your new omnia should pick up edge in the US. I bought mine whilst in Singapore but live in Europe where mine goes to Edge whenever 3G isn't available. Granted, the RF freq's are different between the US, Europe, and parts of Asia, but the phone is spec'd out to pick up Edge in the US. The Omnia was originally designed for the European and Asian markets. My guess is that the reason why it won't pick up 3G in the US is simply a matter of timing. It's been a while since I been back home in the US, but from what I know now, 3G is still rather new and larglely unavailable there. Also my phone was in English at startup. English is the national language in Singapore so there shouldn't be a problem with this if your new phone did indeed originate in Singapore. The Singapore ROM that you will have on your phone isn't too bad at all. When I first inserted my German TMobile SIM, the device didn't have any problems recognizing it or the network it was on. I've since upgraded to a custom ROM (Modaco MCR03, also found on this forum) which works fantastically! The difference between the ROMs is that the custom ROM has less of the stock SAMSUNG apps that a user is unlikely to need, thus there's more system memory availability (not storage memory, big difference!). You can also upgrade to a stock SAMSUNG ROM for the Omnia directly from Samsung's site, but ROM type is limited to the phone's origin (in your case Singapore) otherwise the upgrade won't work. Custom ROM's can be flashed on most devices with some exceptions so be cautious about this. As far as settings...if you are happy with the phone right out of the box, then there's not too much you will have to do except for personal and regional settings on the phone, which are all done through Windows Mobile and will also accomodate the denominations commonly used in the US. To be honest, the Omnia is bit boring out of the box, but thankfully enough, there are limitless apps and even some registry tweaks that you can use to hot rod the thing up. When you get yours, I recommend you that you take a gander at the following... SPB Shell, Skins for SPB Shell, SPB keyboard, MS Voice Command for WM, Sprite or SPB Backup, Copilot Live, SPB Monitor, SPB Traveler (useful if your constantly away from home) and MemMaid... just to name a few. These, of course, are my own preferences, but if you read through the posts on this forum, you'll educate yourself on what's possible and what's out there. Hope this helps!

I thought that your phone was coming from Singapore already. In any case, some of what I said still applies, but if you buy your phone within the US, then I believe that the exclusive dealer is Verizon. In addition, the Omnia type is actually the I910, and the ROMS between the I900 and I910 are completely different and incompatible with one another. I recommend that you read carefully through the threads on this forum that pertain to the I910 because from what I've read, VZ really waters the phone's features down, has it locked down with their own ROM, and has sales exclusivity for the time being. You just may be better off buying an actual I900 that is unlocked from a independent dealer (largely available from the internet). You mentioned AT&T so I may be wrong at least about the exclusivity. Again, hope this helps!

Guest liamwolf Posted February 7, 2009 Report Posted February 7, 2009 (edited) Okay, I bought the Omnia, and it came with HJ1 rom. As I've already mentioned I live in the US, and I'm wanting to update to a newer rom. The problem is that samsungs official site doesn't have United States on its list, which I knew it wouldn't, but what have country have you guys chosen? The UK or Singapore. Thanks. EDIT: Just found out that XX means UK thus I should go with that correct? PDA:I900DTHJ5/DTHJ5 Phone: I900XXHJ1 Edited February 7, 2009 by liamwolf
