However I also installed some skins, but none of these have an exit button. So I can only get to the today screen by pressing a hardware button. Is this normal? Or is there a way to customise the bottom tabs?

If you have skills you can customize the bottom bars of this app, but you don't really need to (unless you REALLY want to)...another way of closing Shell and getting to your Today screen again is to swipe from the bottom of the screen up-ward. about half-way up the screen MobileShell will close. Hope this helped!!!
