Guest meabigbaldguy Posted January 1, 2009 Report Posted January 1, 2009 hi guys. i just got my omnia 2weeks ago.. i got it from thailand.. Anyways it came with route66 and i dont know how exactly to use it... when i open it and let it work it says that i have to go to store to buy maps plus how does it actually work? i didnt setup my Service providor GPRS Yet... do i need that so it can connect to a satalite or what? do i need to do anything in the phone settings to make it connect to a satalite or what? thx About the GPS maps... it appears that you'll have to buy the maps, unless you can find them on the internet for free. I use Copilot Live, which works very well, but I also had to purchase the additional maps separately. I don't know about Route 66, but any decent GPS program should have a setup feature which will either guide you through the setup process, or do it automatically. Copilot was a combination of both. If your phone originated in Thailand, and you're in Europe or the USA, you just may want to get a copy of Copilot, Garmin, or Tom Tom. Beware with Tom Tom because there have been numerous posts about incompatibility, or something to that extent. I bought Copilot because I was able to download the software directly from their website, whereas with Garmin, I would have had to purchase a separate SD storage card containing the software, and then wait for it to arrive by mail. Copilot was also a little bit cheaper as well. About your service provider... You don't need GPRS to make the GPS work. Omnia has it's own built in GPS receiver, though it is said to be notoriously slow to find a satellite signal. FYI, I've never experienced this problem, but others in this forum say that they have. The Omnia does have a feature called GPS Extra, which will use the WAP connection to track a GPS satellite. Google Maps will use this option as well if you designate this in it's settings. The feature can be disabled from the settings screen. As far as setting up your GPRS connection, that should be automatic once you've inserted your SIM card from your carrier. At least, that was all I needed to do. You can also verify this by going to the settings screen, and then to the connections tab. If you already aren't familiar with ROMs (firmware for your phone), then you may also want to follow this forum and educate yourself on them because you'll read a lot about them. There's a lot of custom ROMs out there for the Omnia I900, I907, I908, and I910. If you fancy an upgrade them make sure that you know what you have for sure. You can verify this by looking in the phone settings under Version. An I900 will end in something like DXHJ9 on the PDA's software listing. You can download a geniune Samsung Omnia ROM directly from their website. The ROM type will depend on your location, if your phone is from Thailand, then you will need to select Thailand. If you fancy a custom ROM, then beware of those because some of them may cause certain functions to not work because they aren't properly developed or tested. I use a custom ROM, MCR03, taken from this forum that works great. It was developed by the creator of this forum, and has all of the original Samsung stuff with optimized apps, and it's light on the stock programs that would only otherwise take up space. You can find instructions on flashing a new ROM on Samsungs website... follow them carefully, and upgrade at your own risk... especially with the custom ROMs because they can brick your phone. Go to the weblink below. It's to another blog, not quite as big as this one, but it has enough info about other third party apps that you can use to hot rod your Omnia with. It's how I got started when I got my phone, and it eventually led me to this forum. http://mysamsungomnia.wordpress.com. Hope this helps! Have fun with your phone!
