Guest eduuuuu Posted January 7, 2009 Report Posted January 7, 2009 (edited) My happy experience with Omnia This post is dedicated to everyone that loves Omnia and is trying to get the most of it. I will detailed explain what, how and why I did some procedures to get to a very fast, responsive and easy to use PDA and Cell Phone. I did this from the beginning, I mean. I hard reset my Omnia so I would clean all the unwanted files, database that sometimes are hard to find or remove after everything is set up. So if you want to start all over in a optimized way. Back up everything you don’t want to lose, so you could restore later. I recommend backing up only contacts, calendar, notes, etc. (PIM Information). Don’t back up programs, database or registry since you will do a fresh install. I used Spb backup to do so. First of all. Still using your old configuration, prepare the Storages, using PC.( My Storage and Storage Card). Copy all the files you want to have in your Omnia (pics, music, videos, etc) and the ones you will need to install the programs in your mobile. Prefer Cab files. Organize in folders as you wish, etc. Still using the old configuration (before the hard reset), Reinstall all the programs you use in your Omnia, except for the ones that will be exclusively in Device Memory, and prefer Storage Card to place them all of them. (As read in forums, it seems better for performance and battery issues than My Storage). Basically you can put almost all the programs in Storage Card, so we can save memory, which is precious, right?. Some programs need to be in Device memory. Most of them are the ones that will be running in background or need to wake the device up. Examples: S2U2, PocketAlarm, David Andrs Batti, MS Remote Desktop, Modaco, Omnia Pacthed Dialer, Modaco Omnia SIP, Snailslug TouchResponse, WkTask, Trinket Software PowerSMS, Windows Live. Some programs could be installed in Storage Card but because they are small in size, and because when Installed in device memory they run faster. I’ve chosen to put them in device memory and not in storage card. Examples: S2P, IContact? Some other programs also run files/services in background or they are linked to another program that runs in background, but they can be put in storage card with no problem. Why? Sometimes they are too big, due to skin and other files. Examples: Google Maps, Spb Wireless Monitor, Skype, SkTools, Resco Explorer, Pocket Player, RssReader, Spb Backup, ThumbCal. And why they still work just fine even when they are in Storage Card. Why??? Because for some programs, the files that must be in device memory will be place there even if the programs is put in Storage Card. Example: Spb Wireless Monitor. You can put it in Storage Card and the files that must be in device memory will be there, belive it! Go to windows folder and you will see files from the Spb Wireless monitor in there. These are the files that WM needs to run in background to track your data. Again, the main program will be in Storage Card allowing you to save some space! You can do this to some programs I wrote above, but not to others. Doing a little testing is a good thing before you hard reset. This is what I did: I Installed everything, did benchmarking, moved or removed some files around and checked if they worked. I am telling you the programs I use, you could do this testing with yours and figure out if they can be in Storage Card or not. Write down in a paper everything, so you won’t forget later (after hard reset) where they must be. Why I installed everything (all the programs!) still in the old configuration / ROM if I’m going to format it later? I have like, 50 programs in Storage Card that do not use at all background services or even must be in device memory… And… I have notice that I would lose a bit of memory(space) everytime a program was installed. Maybe because the database, log, registry, cache get filled with all that information causing to “eat up” our precious device memory (space). Some programs you will not install, because they already come with the ROM. Example google Maps. I have notice that Google maps is installed twice in PDA. One located in windows folder and the other in Device/Program Files. To free up more space, You can Move Google Maps folder from Device/Program Files to Storage Card/Program Files. Using Resco Explorer, go to Storage Card/Program Files/Google Maps and find .exe file and create a shortcut to Start Menu from that file. You should do this so you can use the program, because the tab from Manilla won’t work anymore. So you need the shortcut. In my opinion, it’s more important free space than a big useless tab that I would only use to click on the Earth and launch Google Maps. If you agree, this is useful. Don’t forget to disable Location Tab on Manilla configuration, since it’s useless. You can do the same with RSSReader and Samsung TouchPlayer, that may be under windows folder or Device/Program Files… move them to Program Files in Storage Card and recreate shortcut to start manu and delete the old one that links to the old location. You will free up a lot with that. This 3 programs together are almost 10 Mb. After everything is installed, go to windows folder and copy “Start Menu” folder to a safe place in Storage Card. (Start Menu folder is where all the shortcuts from installed programs are). This is an important step to save time after the hard reset. I used Resco Explorer to manage files and remove/ move things around. Why this: After the hard reset your programs will still be in Storage Card and the shortcuts (links) will be saved , so there is no need to install them again, and you won’t lose space for registry, database etc. Now it’s time to Hard Reset. Only Main Memory!!! Do not erase My Storage or Storage Card.! Now comes the easy part. customizing and enjoying… So where we’re at: 1-back up PIM contacts, etc 2-Organized my Storages using PC 3-Installed everything optimizing and preferring Storage Card for programs 4- Saved Start Menu folder in a safe place in storage card 5- Hard Reset Main Memory I use M2D04 from Passoa. It’s the best in my opinion. Almost no bugs and it’s fast, easy to use and looks nice. With a fresh and clean Device with a lot of free space, let’s try to keep it that way. go to the file explorer that comes with it. And Copy back to Windows folder the “Start Menu” folder. Now you can launch / use almost all the programs. Open your File Explorer. I used Resco Explorer and install the programs that can only run in Device Memory. You probably know which one, since you did some testing. WkTask, windows live, batti, Modaco’s prog. Etc. You will notice that you have installed just a few programs in device memory and you have a bunch already installed in storage card that works fine. (because you saved their shortcuts and restored) and they are all available for use and working fine! And… You have a lot of free space. And we can free up some more. Now, restore your PIM data only. Contacts, calendar, notes, etc. dot not restore registry, database, etc. You device is ready to use with a lot of programs installed and working… and with a bunch of free memory. If you moved before the hard reset Google maps to Storage Card you have to remove it again. And some other things as well. Remove GoogleMaps folder from Device/Program Files. Remove RSSReader this two you have already moved and recreated shortcuts. Remember? If you don’t use Silverinbox: Remove “inbox” folder from windows. Move M2DC or ManillaGFX from windows folder to Storage Card. If you don’t use TouchLaunch you can remove or move it to Storage Card. It’s under Program Files in Device. If I need to disable any tab from Manilla or edit the home screen etc… the configuration file for that will be under Storage Card/Program files/M2DC. There’s no need for this folder to be in Device Memory. Doing this things I had almost 60 Mb still free. The amazing thing is that I have a bunch programs installed. This is it! You have a lot to use in your device and a lot of free space. Since until now it’s been a lot of work… I would recommend doing a full backup. if anything goes wrong… you can re-start from this point. Now you can customize some things and do some registry tweaks. To optimize even more your Omnia. Editing Ringtone 3s delay: Looping Ringtones Delay Ring tone has a standard 3 seconds delay before repeating. You can set the delay from 0 second to how many second that you want. Code: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Sounds\RingTone0 Change 'Script' from 'av0pw3r' to 'av0pr' and you'll get 0 sec delay. OR change it to av0pw1r = wait for 1 sec av0pw2r = wait for 2 sec and so on... Plus..heres the code a - stands for display r - repeat/replay the script again c - sets the volume C50, c150, c100 f - means flash .. f1 flash for 1 second and f0 stands for flash continuously p -means play ringtone v- vibrate then incorporate with number to state how many seconds it will vibrate example. v3 vibrate for 3seconds or v - for continous w - stands for wait or pause then specify how many seconds like w3(wait for 3 seconds) heres the example Flash - af1w60f0 Ring - apw3r Ring Once - ap Increasing Ring - c50apw3c150r Vibrate Then Ring - v3w3apw3r Vibrate - av3w3r Short Vibrate - av1w3r Vibrate Long Then Ring - v3w3v3w3apw3r Vibrate And Ring - av0pw3r Increasing Ring And Vibrate - c50apv3w3c150r Fast Vibrate And Flash - af1v1w1f0r Vibrate and Ring Continously without pausing - av0pr Boost the Omnia volume: I've seen a lot of people asking how they can boost their volume of their headsets or when watching a movie through the loud speaker (its very low). Even ringtones are effected by this. So I thought I better finally register and post my findings for other I900 owners. Its quite simple and does not require a hard rest. In the phone keypad type: *#0002*28346# You will then have a screen pop up called audio control util. How to change the loudspeaker volume for ringtones, movies, mp3s etc Click menu, normal then handset (the first one, Phones headset/loudspeaker) Here you can change: Speaker volume: SPK(02) -db is less volume, I have set this to -1.5db (level) Digital-to-analog: DAC(0C) This effects the overall volume of Mp3s, movies etc -both headset and loud speaker. I have set this to 0db. Radio Volume: RVOL How to change the headset / earphones volume. Click menu, normal then headset (the second one, Headphones) Here you can change: Headphones volume: HP(02) -db is less volume +db is more volume, I have set this to 0db (level) Digital-to-analog: DAC(0C) This effects the overall volume of Mp3s, movies etc. I have set this to 0db. Radio Volume: RVOL *You must click menu / apply for changes to take effect, *I recommend play a Mp3 launch the app, then apply the changes and set your prefered max volume. *Setting high levels could damage the loud speaker or your headphones, not to mention your hearing!. To disable Cleartype for good: HKLM\System\GDI\ClearTypeSettings set NativeOrientation to 180 set OffOnRotation to 1 Auto GPRS disconnect ;Enable auto disconnect GPRS if not use 60 seconds [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\ConnMgr\Planner\Settings] "CacheTime"=dword:0000003c "SuspendResume"="GPRS_bye_if_device_off" ;Disable auto connect GPRS [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\PhoneExtendFunction] "EnableCPHSONS"=dword:00000001 "NoGPRSAutoAttach"=dword:00000001 Increase Incall Volume [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\SoundCategories\InCall] “InitVol”=4 WIFI Tethering - http://www.modaco.com/content/i9×0-omnia-...-verizon-omnia/ Improve Screen Calibration Accuracy – http://www.howardforums.com/showpost.php?p=12124701&postcount=315 1. Click OK to save it. Hapatic Feedback on all apps function - http://www.howardforums.com/showpost.php?p...p;postcount=275 This is recommended for those who disable the default Samsung dialer skin. It will give you the touch vibration on the default WM dialer and other applications. For Samsung Omnia user, set the ID = 11 for it to work. Or just Install TouchResponse. Increase Scroll Bar Thickness (for finger friendly) - http://www.howardforums.com/showpost.php?p=12085704&postcount=229 Improve Touch Sensitivity [ H K E Y _ L O C A L _ M A C H I N E \ \ H A R D W A R E \ D E V I C E M A P \ T O U C H ] ” C l i c k ” = d w o r d : set to 2000 [ H K E Y _ L O C A L _ M A C H I N E \ \ H A R D W A R E \ D E V I C E M A P \ T O U C H ] ” D o w n U p ” = d w o r d : set to 750 soft reset required Disable Samsung Dialer Skin (save approx 10MB RAM) [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Phone\Skin] “Enabled”=dword:1, you should change to 0 and reboot your Omnia (This disable video call) Disable Auto Keyboard PopUp (pretty annoying to some) [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Sip] “TurnOffAutoDeploy”=dword:1 I also remapped Home screen using SSMaPa, that comes with this rom, M2D04 and it’s under windows. When I click Calendar it opens ThumbCal. When I click on the clock it opens Samsung clock. Which I think it’s the only thing that can be useful from Samsung interface. The rest of samsung’s stuff for me is crappy, laggy, slow, too big… ugly… It is recommended to optimize your device for performance with SkTools, or AdvanceConfig or MemMaid, etc. On SkTools, Go -> Optimize – Performance and click Action/ Optimize. Will restart. This will increase font and display cache and other stuff to make your device faster. Below, a list of the Programs I use and where I Installed them. My ROM: M2D04 from PaSSoA Device Memory: Batti – Battery Status on the top iContact – Best Contact manager in my opinion – does not replace dialer PocketAlarm – Nice prog that speaks the time and can be used with mp3 PowerSMS – Schedule SMS to a specific time S2P – Nice Light Player S2U2 – Best Locker – Iphone like TouchLauch – Best Launcher (comes with M2d04) TouchResponse – Vibrate at every click Wktask – Best task manager Windows Live Windows Mobile Remote Desktop Storage Card: Destinator 7 Destinator 8 – Still trying to make it work on Omnia Igo 8.3 About 50 different medical programs from Skyscape Barcorama - Take 320x240 pic to reads Bar Code. Also use to take people pic to use as contact photo RepliGO – RGO file Reader Medical Consultant Sftw Foxit Reader – PDF file reader - In my opinion the best – fastest and light. (tested a bunch) Google Maps Isilo – PDB file Reader M2DC – configuration utility for Manilla2D Medical Wizards – Netter Anatomy, Ultimate Package for Organs and ERSuite MP3 Trimmer – cuts mp3 to make small file for ringtone, really useful MSDict – Reader for dictionaries, such as Oxford and language to language translator Pocket Player – Complete Nice Player with a lot of features – Support BT Resco Explorer – one of the best file manager – support Bt and network file management RSS Reader – comes with device Sanford Guide to antimicrobial therapy SKTools – PDA management Skype Spb Backup Spb Brain Evolution Spb Wireless Monitor SSMaPa – I moved from windows after I remapped Home screen – this has the original manila file to restore when necessary.(keeping in windows folder would only occupy memory. StyleTap – really useful program that emulates Palm OS , so you can run any palm os program on you pocket ppc – windows mobile. ThumbCal – Calendar and task management. Really nice and finger/user friendly TorchButton – creates shortcut for flashlight – useful for m2d roms since we cannot do flashlight using volume button. With all that on my device, running lightning fast, I Still have 55 mb free for Storage and 61 Mb free for Program (RAM) AFTER DOING EVERY INSTALLATION AND CUSTOMIZATION. FULL BACK UP THE DEVICE. Now you have a file. That can be used everytime things goes wrong or the device get’s full of crap, and this happen very often if you use your device trying to get the most of it.. The good part of doing all this is. Next time: Just Hard Reset and Restore the back up File. This way you will have in less than 5 min. your device back, with all the tweaks , tricks and full working programs you like, and the best of all: with a bunch of free memory back again. Believe me, you will have to hard reset every once in a while. So it’s not a bad thing to have your device’s fresh and clean full backup file ready to go. Just remember, to back up in a separate file, PIM (contacts , calendar, etc…) from time to time… You can restore them separate too. So this is why I did everything to free some space up, so I could disable samsung’s interface and install Icontact, ThumbCal, etc. And to have My device’s fresh and clean full backup file ready to go for everytime I need it. What would be easier. Build my own rom. The thing is… I don’t know how to, and I don't have the time to learn or try to learn and cook a rom I know it’s a lot of hassle, but if you are newbie like me, and don’t know how to build your own ROM like me. Doing all this might make things easier in the future for you. I’d like to thank Paul for this incredible forum and all his work. PaSSoA, for this excellent ROM. And all the other users that help with tricks and tweaks, and tips… Credits to all of you. This is my experience. And I am very happy with my Omnia. Thank you for letting me share my view with you. Guest alinez Posted January 7, 2009 Report Posted January 7, 2009 How do I full backup and then restore it?
Guest eduuuuu Posted January 7, 2009 Report Posted January 7, 2009 How do I full backup and then restore it? Whenever you're ready to backup your device with all your stuff: Use SPB Backup Software and click "Full Backup" Chose where to save it on Storage Card To restore just open the backup file you created. For this, you don't need SPB Backup installed. The device will restart automatically and all you're stuff are back exactly the same. P.S. When doing the restore. You will see "Option" in one of the steps. Click on that and select " Force ROM Upgrade Mode". If it's the same ROM you are backing up and restoring, leave it in "Normal Mode" This can be useful if you customized some things that "originally was locked in ROM". For example: You changed things on Home screen, Changed wallpaper, skins, etc. This are ROM files and configurations, but with the Force ROM Upgrade Mode, your backup overwrites the ROM. This is another reason that your device will be exactly the same as it was. edu
Guest philcat Posted January 7, 2009 Report Posted January 7, 2009 How do I full backup and then restore it? As a newb, I'd be interested in knowing what you do here for a backup & restore too, I just format & start again from fresh, which can take longer than I have. As for the original post, thanks for all your time & effort, it will save a lot of us a lot of time after hitting that hard reset button!
Guest whitj Posted January 7, 2009 Report Posted January 7, 2009 For those of us with the i910, will all of these tricks and tweaks work? And thank you SO MUCH for compiling this. I'm a new Omnia user, and I'm just cracking the surface with what I can do!
Guest eduuuuu Posted January 7, 2009 Report Posted January 7, 2009 As a newb, I'd be interested in knowing what you do here for a backup & restore too, I just format & start again from fresh, which can take longer than I have. As for the original post, thanks for all your time & effort, it will save a lot of us a lot of time after hitting that hard reset button! Exactly, Hard Reseting / Formatting is a thing that we will probably be doing with our devices and computers every once in a while. So I'd say it's not waste of time at all if we spend some time organizing, saving a copy of our Storage Card and My Storage in our computers(hard drives) and also creating a backup file for the device itself, where all the configs, tweaks and progs are back to the way it was, the way we customized, the way we like, without the need to install and re-do everything. Because, even when we format our computer, it takes some time to go back the way it was. This full post is explaining how to prepare your device the way you like and to do a Full backup, with optimization and leaving a lot of free memory. Device free of crap. So please, take some time to read the post,... I know it's big. But I also know it will help you in the future saving time for you. Again I repeat, It would be a lot easier to build my rom with the programs I like... I would remove all the samsung's crap and would do all the registry tricks and tweaks... But I can't, I don't know how to and I don't have time to learn. I thinks it's easier if you get a good rom, that works fine, and customize in your own way, and then, back it up. When you do this, indirectly, "you've created your own rom". Windows Mobile is not perfect, Samsung's application sucks and Samsung's hardware configuration has a bunch os limitations. So if you want to get the most of your Omnia, I believe it's necessary to customize and tweak it a little bit. Otherwise, if you don't remove what you don't use and optimize it for performance use. You will install a dozen programs and your memory will be filled up and you will have no RAM to launch things, etc. And you will feel like throwing Omnia against the wall or buying an Iphone, which is not customizable, (that are for people that don't know how to manage a pda). When I see people complaining about Omnia, I don't blaim them, understand that they don't know how to use the great machine they have on hands. Buy a regular phone if you are just going to text message, take picture and talk, no ofense to anyone. edu
Guest eduuuuu Posted January 7, 2009 Report Posted January 7, 2009 For those of us with the i910, will all of these tricks and tweaks work? And thank you SO MUCH for compiling this. I'm a new Omnia user, and I'm just cracking the surface with what I can do! I'm new too. I''m just trying to be a little bit smart when concerning to use a PDA with Phone. Maybe I said some things that are wrong on my post above, but I believe, if you read it all, you could extract the whole idea of what I meant and what to do. I'm not sure if everything works for the i910, but I believe it does. Don't be afraid to install things, test features... Always with caution! Don't tweak what you don't know. This way you'll be ready to build your phone the way you like. Write down everything so you know what to install later, what programs you liked, which ones does not work with Omnia... And the most important, use a ROM, that gets closer to the features and programs you like. For example, I wouldn't use Samsun'g official ROM, because I hate their interface, Samsung's plugin... Picture frame, Photo slide, Podcats, Shozu... It's so much crap that I wouldn't use that would only be there to make my device slower and with no free memory so I could use with what i like. This is why I chose a nice ROM, with a good interface, fast one, (manilla2d), that has almost everything from samsung removed and almost no bugs. . edu

Guest eduuuuu Posted January 7, 2009 Report Posted January 7, 2009 Well i agree with most of your post but not this one. Some or most of my programs use registry to save registration info and some other things so i can't say that i agree with leaving your card as it was. But the rest of your post is excelent. I agree with you too. Almost all of my programs use registry to store serials and keys for them. But, I guess I forgot to say... after the hard reset, I open the programs that require registration and type the keys for all of them, so I would have everything fully working and registered. In my opinion I think It's worth it. I don't know where and why windows mobile puts so much crap into device memory when you install programs in the storage card. And this effect can be seen easily if you install a lot of programs in Storage Card. So the purpose of hard reseting is to get rid of all that crap that is put into device memory, and be with programs only and the shortcuts you've saved. Later... You register them all and back up. I have tried to do Clean Stuff programs, with Sktools, Clear temp, MemMaid... They don't work very well for this. If I'm putting programs in Storage Card is because I want the Device memory to be free! So I figured that if I wanted that hard reseting was the solution with the other procedures after that. tks for sharing your view edu
Guest zdhar Posted January 13, 2009 Report Posted January 13, 2009 Hi eduuu thanks for your topic, following the read i decided to install MSDICT (in java) i got an issue with it, the application only recognize keypad hardware (you know what i mean ?) so the samsung keypad dont show letters and keys like "c (for cancel)" or "up,down, left, right" i think its due to all java application...or not ? maybe do you have a solution ? thanks for feedback !!
Guest rammy121 Posted March 19, 2009 Report Posted March 19, 2009 ..and with this great Omnia, when the battery goes flat, can you re-charge it using the U.S.B. cable (the "Data" cable)??
Guest Mekhet Posted March 21, 2009 Report Posted March 21, 2009 (edited) Really Great post, man. Thx very much. Just a question... How did you installed so many skyscape apps? I cant get the option to install it on my Storage or flash card, so I always get the "not enough space" issue. Any tricks on that? Edited March 21, 2009 by Mekhet
Guest milong007 Posted May 23, 2009 Report Posted May 23, 2009 Thank you for the great, conscise information. I just bought Omnia i900 and would love to install netter's anatomy flash cards. I noticed that you listed it among apps you use. I tried several website but in the end always end up redirected to iphone (including Medical Wizard). Is there any trick to obtaining version compatible with Omnia? Thank you. Milong
Guest banderdragon Posted May 23, 2009 Report Posted May 23, 2009 found this ages ago, can't remember who the original post was. Use 3.5 framework Open a registry editor HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\.NETCompactFramework if you have the new .NET 3.5 successfully installed you will see 2 items in that folder. 2.0.7045.00 3.5.7283.00 edit the value on 2.0 to be zero edit the value on 3.5 to be one After you have edited both, perform a soft reset Do both edits before you reset As to registry editors, i like PHMRegEdit
Guest Eliese Posted May 24, 2009 Report Posted May 24, 2009 Thanks for the very nice post :) I myself is also a newbie, and I'm still trying to get the best out of my omnia. And currently, I'm enjoying it <_<.
Guest jlc0005 Posted May 24, 2009 Report Posted May 24, 2009 ... Some programs need to be in Device memory. ... Do your references to "device memory" include Main (Storage/Program) memory AND My Storage? or do your references to "Storage Card" refer to both My Storage and Storage Card? Thanks, John
Guest momok Posted May 26, 2009 Report Posted May 26, 2009 (edited) Does anyone have any recommendations for a full backup program that is free and works across new ROMs? i dont want to pay for SPB Backup <_< Also, may I ask, does it make a difference how big your storage card capacity is when doing this procedure? Guest phullofphil Posted May 26, 2009 Report Posted May 26, 2009 (edited) I was told a clone program like sprite clone is the only way to get a full image. But i really do not think even that will work on a locked phone. As far as I know there is know way to unlock omnia 910. Or i just do not know how to use sprite clone. Any body know how. If it just the stuff you added than there is lots of good backup programs. sprite backup sbd backup or resco backup all work well. Get them in bits Edited May 26, 2009 by phullofphil
