Guest sipper Posted January 29, 2003 Report Posted January 29, 2003 A great deal of guidance and comment on hard/ soft resets is given elsewhere on this forum but what is really needed is a more user friendly reset procedure, particularly hard reset – even if the SPV worked perfectly it (or perhaps we users!) would not be infallible and we need a quick and simple reset procedure. On the assumption that O are reading posts to this forum I would recommend that they look at how these resets are performed on other PDAs e.g. the Pocket PC (PPC) and speak to the people at M$ (or whoever) who designed them. The PPC reset procedures are much more user friendly then the SPV – a simple press of a single inset hardware button (soft reset) or two hardware buttons (hard reset) without the need for the user to navigate through Canary screens and menus etc. In the short term such changes might require reconfiguring of the existing hardware buttons in some way, but in the longer term perhaps a soft reset inset button similar to the PPC would be best. (In fact there are now software apps for the PPC which allows both soft and hard resets from within the PPC itself – although these may not be much use if you have a serious freezing/ hanging problem etc. For you uncertified people who might want to try them on the SPV, these apps are available through Handango's main website : www.handango.com. The SPV/ smartphone section has now been added here if this hasn't already been noted elsewhere on the forum.) Sipper
Guest HelloDave Posted January 30, 2003 Report Posted January 30, 2003 Don't forget that doing a hard reset isn't exactly endorsed by Orange, they're designed to be done by service engineers, not end users, so it's not in Orange's, HTC's or M$'s interest to make them simple to do. PPCs are what they say - pocket PC's, the SPV is a phone and therefore users don't expect to have to reset it in the same way as a PC. If you're the type of user who needs a simple way to hard reset your SPV then you probably shouldn't be doing it in the first place! Imagine all the tech support calls Orange would get from users saying "I clicked this option that said hard reset to see what it did and I lost all my settings; I'm going to sue" etc etc - much easier to let the user do it at their own risk, and then they've got no comeback on Orange if it all goes belly up. As for a soft reset all you need to do is turn the phone off and on (or pull out the battery if you're in a hurry) - how simple do you want ;) It's all very well having an inset button, but what if you're without a handy biro to push it with...
