Guest wingnutLP Posted January 14, 2009 Report Posted January 14, 2009 hi I recently bought a Sony laptop that comes with an HSDPA module inside it it also comes with a T mobile card in the box. The T mobile card is only for a £30 month contract and really I would like to get a pay as you go type Sim card for it. Unfortunately I've phoned a couple of the different providers including O2 and T-Mobile are and all of them seem to say that their Sim cards only work in their USB modems provided. can anyone tell me if there is a provider out there that is prepared or able to give me a standard sim card I can just slot into my computer install whatever software is necessary and then hook straight onto the Internet?
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted January 14, 2009 Report Posted January 14, 2009 I use a 3 prepaid SIM and it costs me a fiver a month for the basic internet bundle... works fine! P

Is the HSDPA module sim providor locked? Should work with t-mobile PAYG sim no problem, although I believe the best deals for mobile data are on 3 PAYG - I use a £5 month 'phone' internet bolt-on with a 3 PAYG sim instead of their £10 / 1gb 'broadband' add on with a USB dongle and in a 3G windows mobile with no issues or 'fair use' problems - and I absolutley hammer it ;-) HTH. P Hi Paul, do you mean a standard PAYG sim like this http://threestore.three.co.uk/payg/dealsum...ercode=DSLPP067 rather than a "mobile broadband" one? The broadband ones all come with contracts or USB dongles http://threestore.three.co.uk/broadband/ Do you mean just a regular phones sim with a data bundle? Is the HSDPA module sim providor locked? Thanks :) I am not sure if it is locked I assumed not as T mobile didn't subsidise the cost of my laptop!! how do you add an internet bolt on to a PAYG sim is it different to airtime? Hello, yep a standard 3 network PAYG sim will work fine although the speed of a dedicated broadband 3 PAYG sim may be better? I know voda have different speeds for different sim flavours, not sure about 3. You then register it, top up, log in online, but DON'T activate the mobile broadband option ( as the splash screen for when I log in with my 3 mobile broadband sim tries to get me to do) - instead go to your account, select the add-on's and buy the £5 monthly internet bundle from your topped-up credit. It then works both in a broadband dongle or a phone for internet access so should be fine in your laptop. M.S
Guest Straight_Bat Posted July 11, 2009 Report Posted July 11, 2009 Hi Paul or Mysterious stranger, I have topped up a 3G SIM from 3 with a £5 internet bundle but after having placed it my HSDPA enabled Samsung NC10, I can only achieve the following: 1) search for results on Google but if I click any of the links in the results, the websites do not open 2) the three.co.uk website and any of its pages open fine. I have tried this with Firefox 3.5 and IE8 I am wondering if they are now detecting the user agent from the PC and are blocking any access on the £5 internet bundle from a PC. Can you confirm that your PAYG dongles are still working? Thanks
Guest Paul Posted July 13, 2009 Report Posted July 13, 2009 Mine IS still working! That is very weird... does anyone else see this issue? P
Guest pete_thomson Posted July 15, 2009 Report Posted July 15, 2009 Mine IS still working! That is very weird... does anyone else see this issue? P Mine was fine from my 627 dongle a couple of days back. Not tried it since Monday.
Guest jchamier Posted July 21, 2009 Report Posted July 21, 2009 I've got an unlocked 3 dongle (3 coverage here is low for some odd reason). I've successfully proved its unlocked by getting a rate of 700kbps from my phone's T-mobile SIM inserted in the dongle. However I'd really like to use a T prepay SIM. I already have one, works fine for voice calls and 3G (384kbps) data on my old handset. Anyone managed to get HSDPA enabled on a T prepay SIM / account? Or any other networks selling SIMs only that will enable HSDPA ?
