Guest Supadan Posted January 15, 2009 Report Posted January 15, 2009 Hi all, just purchased a high current output car charger on boxwave.com and i plugged the USB cable that comes standard and plugged it in and plugged it into my car, and there's a connection noise, and the red LED come on from the car charger, but there's no indication on the phone that it's charging. The top right corner doesn't change to a plugged in icon, and nothing on the phone indicates that it's charging. Anyone else get the same problem? Is it the charger? Because the LED comes on..just no action from the phone other than the initial sound Any help is appreciated!
Guest chokia Posted January 15, 2009 Report Posted January 15, 2009 i bought cheap car charger for samsung U900, works just fine
Guest X-Ray A4T Posted January 15, 2009 Report Posted January 15, 2009 i bought cheap car charger for samsung U900, works just fine My samsung car charger that came supplied with my Omnia works fine. Check what colour the LED under the power button is when the charger is plugged in. It should be red like when you plug in the wall charger. If not it is probably faulty. One funny I have had when my phone gets hot is the LED goes orange and it does not charge, usually because the phone has got hot in the car while running GPS apps.

Though i think (i havent tested it yet) that it does charge. I need to drive a longer distance with gps on and this car charger to see what the result is on the battery charge. I dont have the official charger so maybe that has something to do with it.

Jus giving you a headsup, I read somewhere that the GPS drains batteries faster than the car charger can charge it. That is why I purchased a high voltage car charger instead of the standard So perhaps try driving without gps? I am the same as you btw, I havent been able to fully test it. Strange stuff...anyone else?

Guest sabestian Posted January 15, 2009 Report Posted January 15, 2009 My first eBay cheap charger does not charge the phone at all. The second one I bought in carphone wearhouse (what a stupid brand name! ) charges it very well, even with GPS running. Just FYI.
Guest Supadan Posted January 15, 2009 Report Posted January 15, 2009 so as of right now you guys all get a charging icon? For those who work that is

Strange stuff...anyone else? Yes, I read that the GPS drains a LOT of power so that is why I ordered a high capacity (5v @ 2 Amps) car charger. It is originally designed to work with another brand PDA but I'll just switch the power adapters to fit the Omnia. I will test it and if it works I'll pull my car apart again and hard wire it into the dash like mu old Nokia charger. I'm currently using my old nokia charger because it was 5v but I think it's only like 400mA. Samsung are replacing my phone at the moment but when I get it back I'll test the new high output charger and see if it works with the GPS on for longer than 30minutes...which is about how long it takes for the GPS to heat the phone up to 80°c and stop charging the battery. Phil...

My phone draw MORE than 2000mA and blew the fuse in the charger after 30 minutes and smoke poured out of the charger slot!!! end result... SAMSUNG OMNIA DOES NOT WORK AS GPS NAVIGATOR!!!! My original in car charger stoped charging after about an hour probbably after omnia got hot due to use of gps. So are you sure that the 2Acharger and the charging usb cable will charge or at least still maintain the battery on its current power level during longer rides? Or can somebody try? thanks.

Even using a 2A charger is NOT enough to keep the phone at level while using GPS software. It seems the stupid connector on the side can not take more than 1.4A before it starts smoking, therefore, no matter WHAT cable you use, this phone can NOT be used as a navigator. Samsung have had my phone for 3 months now and keep telling me, GPS works fine staying still...Derr!! I finally convinced them to use it in a car and it overheated due to the GPS data constantly updating. My advice, take out optional insurance like I have with Optus, smash the phone and replace it with another, excess is only $145

Maybe there is something wrong with your phone or battery if it gets that hot that fast? I've never had any troubles using gps and some 5$ car charger (propably 0,7A, don't know) even after hours of navigating. Besides if your phone gets too hot already, a more efficient charger would not help you. Do you use bluetooth and/or HSDPA connection at the same time? It would be interesting to measure Omnia's current draw. If someone knows an app that works, please let us know.

In order to protect the battery from exploding the phone stops charging.
Guest necosino Posted April 15, 2009 Report Posted April 15, 2009 Wow, sounds like a few of you have some serious issues with your phones.. I took my phone on a 3hr car trip a few nights ago. Had been using it all day at work, so I had about 40% battery life when we started the trip. I used GPS the entire time, kept my car charger plugged in. After the three hours of constant GPS use (and some texting and 2 calls) my phone was warm, not hot, and had an 80% battery charge (said 100% after I unplugged, but after a couple minutes it went to 80%) I bought a whole set on eBay for $10; car charger, travel charger, and case. Works perfectly I also bought a $10 (At TJ Maxx) windshield mount for the iPhone 3G that the Omnia fits in PERFECTLY when it has a hard case on :excl: My experience: The Omnia is the PERFECT car GPS system!!!
Guest Tim-H Posted April 15, 2009 Report Posted April 15, 2009 Sounds like the people with the overheating/insufficient car charging seem to be using the i900. The i910 uses a different gps chip and I think its a little more effiecient. I did an hour and a half drive with a universal samsung phone charger I bought at best buy. The battery charged a little and it definitely wasnt anywhere near 80c when i was done.

No bluetooth or other data running, just navigation (route 66), but I know that it is not charging with some other softs, so this is not problem with navig. software. I will try to change the batery or something :excl:
Guest sabestian Posted April 23, 2009 Report Posted April 23, 2009 I just wanted to share my findings on Omnia chargers. I had one charger that was charging and the other that was not. The only difference between them was their actual output voltage: - the one that was charging was giving 5.3V, - the one that was NOT charging was giving 5.8V There were no other differences, I swapped the cables, connectors etc (just to be sure) and everything leads to one conclusion - we need 5.3V of charging voltage. My Omnia did not even recognize 5.8V charger at all (the screen was not turning on, the LED was off as well). Oh, BTW, both chargers' outputs were marked at 5V by manufacturers. I even found one that was producing 9V being marked 5V!!! The only correct way to check the voltage is with a proper meter. Hope it helps someone.
