Hi all, amazing forum with great info here!!

I was hoping you can help me though - as i am a really new guy to the world if hacks and unlocking!

I will be getting a Samsung Jack i616 currently locked on the FIDO Network - but I would like to unlock it for the Rogers Network. Is there a way that I can do it at home / on the device without having to bring it in anywhere?

Also - can the GPS be unlocked so that I can use it without paying into a dataplan? So it acts like a standalone Garmin/TomTom/Magellan etc..

Sorry for the newbie style intro and question - I've heard alot about you all and how helpful you have been to many others!

Thanks!

To sim unlock to use on Rogers, you would need toeither take it somewhere or purchase the unlock code online and do it yourself.

For GPS, yes you can.

I suggest you visit www.myblackjack2.com

Lots of info and apps there.

Thanks man! Appreciate the link..

I was looking at doing it online - but wondering on the safety/security of it. Would giving my IMEI # to a site like http://www.gsmphonesource.com/reun.html give them the ability to hack/access my device?

Sorry if that sounds dumb..but you never know.

No. It's safe to do.

I bought mine off of ebay a year ago.

You can go ebay or use a service local to Toronto. There's two posted on craigslist:

http://toronto.en.craigslist.ca/search/sss...&maxAsk=max

$15 to $20 CAD is the normal rate i say.

Thanks man, my fido device arrived in the mail today. Probably gonna go somewhere local to get it done while i am driving around tomorrow on the spot.

I want to throw on the GPS stuff as soon as I get a chance as well.

You recommend a particular GPS Map to install? Is it hard to install it and get it going? I don't have a dataplan (nor do I want to pay for one with Rogers).

I know at AT&T, If I just call them and ask for them to unlock it, they do free of charge. They give you instructions and an unlock code. I'd try that first, couldn't hurt. If they say no, try to talk to a supervisor and see if they won't allow it. Also I recommend Garmin. I have it and love it, you'll need a storage card to install the maps. I can get it to you for free if you PM me. Also check out newegg, they have an 8GB MicroSD card for $14 shipped. Great deal, I bought two and they're very fast. Here's the link:

I actually want to post that the blackjack recommends up to 4GB MicroSD cards. People, including me, use 8GB and have had no problems. I also have an HTC Fuze, in which is my primary device that I mainly use the 8GB in. I just wanted to make that clear before you bought an 8GB. It does work, but 4GB is suppose to be the max.

I want to unlock my i616 but I am having issues with Permissions etc.. It says I don't have permission to install certain cab files. Has this happened to anyone else before?

I think you're talking about data networking, right? I unlocked my BJII from AT&T and I'm using it in Taiwan. What you've got to do to get it to work on another network is 1) change your current network settings in Settings/Connections/GPRS and in Proxy from read only, then delete them and replace them with your own network settings. The way to change the read only is to find the UAMgr in the Windows folder, run it, click Menu/Tool/Unlock readonly. Next you need to add the new connections in the GPRS and proxy settings for your new network--call the provider for that info. Finally, open Internet Explorer and go to Menu/Tools/Connections and set the options according to your provider's info.
