I've been wanting to get an Omnia for awhile now, and I'm thinking about picking up the i910 from Verizon tonight. What I mainly want to know is, what is the main differences between the two (read: what has verizon removed/disabled). I've heard about the whole GPS with VZnav only issue, hopefully that gets fixed/removed/hacked eventually. I've heard random things like new cpu and battery life better/worse, but I wanted to clarify as they were not reputable sources. Any input is greatly appreciated, as well as any knowledge about getting an overseas GSM Omnia for use with AT&T (my secondary option if Verizon removes too much functionality).

Well, you can get a 16GB Omnia i900- the VZW i910 is only 8GB.

The GPS has been kneecapped, as has the WM6 VoIP support. Additionally, they've removed one of the Samsung homescreens, but its not difficult to get back. That's all I've noticed so far.

Oh, and at this point, custom ROMs are out of the question for the i910. So no fun cooked ROMs. Yet. :-)

I can't speak for the actual differences in batt life / performance, as I had an iPhone on ATT prior to my i910 on VZW, but its a good phone. The GSM i900 is retardedly expensive without a contract, so I'd say go for the i910 on VZW.

I switched over from ATT as my contract was up, and changed from a Treo 750 to the Omnia on Verizon about two weeks ago. I've generally been very happy with it.

The GPS issue is a pain, but that's going to be resolved very soon. I'm thrilled with the EVDO performance here in Scotts Valley, CA... I consistently get 600-700kbps up and down, sometimes as high as 850. Poor UTMS coverage here from ATT so about 75% of the time the best I could do was EDGE, which sucked bigtime.

EVDO is a disadvantage in not being able to do data and voice simultaneously, but this hasn't been a deficit for me.

Finally, the one major frustration I'm having is I can't get my Wifi to connect to my Linksys WRT600N router. I'm sure it's something that can be solved, but haven't found the solution yet. OTOH, I've successfully connected to Wifi elsewhere, so it works.

Tethering: Verizon wants to squeeze you for everything they can so the WM6 ICS app is missing, and it's not possible to use your phone as an internet connection for a laptop out of the box. However, thanks to the Modaco community, you can find the instructions here for restoring the ICS app, and adding a Wifi router app allowing a computer to connect to the phone via wifi and share the data connection. Screw Verizon, yeah!

All-in-all I'm very happy with the phone, and having a lot of fun with it. Just about everything Verizon has done to cripple the phone can be easily worked around or fixed with info here, and there's not a lot they screwed with. You'll be happy with it -- get it!

Wow, thanks for all the quick responses. Very helpful. I didn't even realize about the 8gig vs 16gig, I completely overlooked that.

This isn't a permanent issue though, right? Is it just because it hasn't been out as long or is it a verizon thing? Or does there have to be an updated ROM released for people to make the custom ROMs with?

And what does having an Omnia with Verizon with unlimited text and data cost? I have a premium plan but I'm sure they wont let me keep it as it's required to have a data plan with any pda/smartphone. Which sucks, but oh well....

I'm hardly an expert with Windows Mobile... And its been a few years (PPC2003) since I've done anything hardcore. But it is possible; it just comes down to finding the right firmware gurus to extract it, play with it, etc... Not a permanent thing at all. Its being worked on as we speak, I've been reading.

The damned thing is so new, the VZW reps ask to play with it when I pull it out in the store. Half of the stores around me don't even have a fully-functioning demo, and its in very short supply.

IANAVZWSR (I Am Not A VeriZon Wireless Sales Rep), so giving you a 100% correct answer is impossible. Rates tend to vary depending on moon phase, region, and the cut of your gib, as interpreted by the given rep you're working with. But I pay $10/month for unlimited SMS (aka, text) and $29.95/month for the unlimited data.

Yeah, Verizon's pricing differs greatly. When i got my first cell phone from verizon over 4 years ago, we all went up to Trenton where my dad knew the manager of the store. He was apparently giving us a huge discount on everything, which he was, as he was explaining what the normal price vs our price was. When we got back to Toms River and needed to address a few account problems, we went to our local store and their normal prices were our "discounted" prices lol. So Verizon is much more costly in North Jersey. But again, thanks to everyone for helping me out, I'm going to leave work now and go straight to VZW and pick one up (if they have any) and post back once I got it.

Are the cases /housings the same between the two phones? My i910 has some scratches, I see tons of OEM i900 cases (talking about the actual phone enclosure / bezel, not a carry case or protector) but none for i910. Can I order the i900 case for the i910?

Example:

Thanks!

i think there is a little difference if you mind the backside loudspeaker:

You might also compare dimensions if you find them.

By the way, you can't change SIM card in USA??? So if you change operator, you have to change the device??? WT* is that all about???

That is one major difference between the i900 and i910.

Its called CDMA (i910) vs GSM (i900). GSM uses a SIM card and CDMA does not.

If you take the CDMA device to a CDMA carrier, you most likely can use it (if it is unlocked). Likewise, if you take a GSM device to another GSM carrier, you can also most likely use it (again, if it is unlocked).

You can't take a GSM device and move to a CDMA carrier and likewise the other way as the devices are not compatible.

This is NOT new.

BTW I can and have activate other CDMA devices all the time via the web page where you can key in the ISN number of the device. No card switch needed.

Verizon raped the hell out of the poor i910.

Ive ownded both the i900 and i910 and the i900 is faster and you dont have to worry about coming up with hacks for tethering and gps.

I really hate what verizon did to the phone. Why the hell couldnt they have just left it alone?

I would just wait on the Omnia II or Omnia HD to come to the US.

Hopefully NOT on verizon because they will just rape the phones of all their cool features.
