Best Video encoding & Container settings combo for Omnia.

I normally encode my movies which are mainly disney animation for the kids to mkv/h264 with CQ of 60% with AAC sound (dolby pro logic). This I found maximum quality to compression with a 9gig DVD reduced to 1.5Gigs memory with no "noticible" reduction in quality. TCPMP or Sompy players don't play this high impression.

I was thinking to reducing to ipod compression which I understand is h264 with scaling of 480 width (with proportional height depending if PAL or NTSC ) and bitrate of 800 although they use M4V container to try it in MKV container.

I was wondering what others have used to play both on Omnia and bigger desktop screens.

For omnia willl need something stable and smooth I suspect for enjoyment especially to take advantage of the TVout function.

Any thoughts?

well im sorry, i dont have an answer :D

But i do watch movies and sofar i just put avi or mpeg directly. But ofcourse your probably talking about iso files witch are much larger. I did convert one with spb mobile dvd witch worked pretty good. ofcourse you have to pay for spb but :) ....

anyway i dont know a good size or bitrate. i just know that sofar all the movies i did worked fine on tcmp. I cant say how it works with the tv out, since i dont use it, but i expect if the movie already was good quality on desktop, it will also be fine via tv out.

You know some of the DVD where you left on the dvd read/write in your PC.

You can watch them wirelessly with Omnia.

Not exactly play all like on TV but you can choose the VOB file and play them. Windows media player will play them.

I use ORB.com as gateway to access my home computer. I can see I: drive where my DVD ROM is and the DVD movie that i left inside. Click the VOB file, walla

Spend the modest cost of 30 bucks for CorePlayer. The latest version 1.3 is finally a good program -- most of the bugs that made it intolerable in prior versions have been fixed.

It's the commercial successor to TCPMP (which won't run on the Omnia -- at least on mine), and can handle any codec and/or container you can throw at it.

It's a decent music player too, but I prefer Pocket Player for that purpose, in large part because it has balance adjustment (I have hearing loss in one ear).

Haven't done any testing, IMHO if you want to play on both screen and tvout, I would go for divx with a target bitrate of 500-700 kbit (resulting in 350-500 MB) and MP3 160 kbit. If you are going to watch it on screen, go for 400x240 5:4 with a little cropping or for tvout use the native dimensions. DivX is preferred because the touchplayer plays it quite smoothly and the tv out viewer (using the same engine...) is necessary for high resolution output to the tv. If you use an other player you only get the native omnia resolution.

... I do need to do more research on this topic though :)

Thanks Tomber will give it a try.

I came across this encoder at XDA

he says something similar to yourself regarding playing on the device.

But will the native dimensions you sugestive for TVout actually play on the omnia screen itself with smoothness?

I don't want to encode each movie twice once for omnia screen and one for TVout.

let me know your thoughts!

you can watch even 2000kbps divx/xvid movies on you omnia.

just for testing, i played a ~2000kbps xvid movie with ac3 sound. it played flawlessly with the tv-out function.

used TCPMP player with subtitles plugin. perfect!

you perhaps need to use the version of tcpmp that made for 6.1

I use a program called imtoo mpeg encoder. its stunning. it takes bout an hour and a half for a movie but it come out crisp. also i transfer the coverted movie from my pc to my ps3 and they work excellent you cant tell its non full res until you nose is touchning the screen. i encode them into a 400x240 divx file

Could you make a howto or something similar. I'm looking for a good software to convert some videos.
