Guest blert596 Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 Well, my i900 arrives tomorrow and whilst I'm really looking forward to it, I must admit to feeling a bit of dread in relation to getting the best out of it. I've read through a lot of the threads on here to try and prepare myself for whats to come, and some of the information and solutions given by people on here is nothing short of outstanding. fair play to you all!! But along with the myriad of information on here also comes the associated confusion (well, for me at least) as I stumble from thread to thread thinking "Oooo that sounds/looks nice, I'll have to try that". And I'm now at the stage that following through some of the more technical threads (techinal IMO anyway) sorting out various bugs etc is filling me with a fair bit of fear that I could screw things up pretty easily if I try to run before I can walk. (Something which I tend to do) So instead of just diving in and picking a new ROM, UI etc I was hoping I could take a bit of gentle guidance through how to progress without risking the wrath of SWMBO if I turn my new phone into a brick. The problem I have is trying to figure out what i should be looking for, what I should be replacing and when I should be doing it. There's a plethora of great stuff her, but for a newbee like me its all a bit much and I'm hoping some of you can guide me (and probably some others) through things in a more logical manner than me saying "Oooh, thats nice and shiny" and diving in headfirst. I'll be getting a T-Mobile branded phone and in another thread Paul posted to say the first thing to do "is get rid of", I think he referred to the ROM as "a monstrosity". So the problem I have is what procedure should I should be doing things in, and how to learn along the way. I dont really want just to be clicking a button and installing stuff I have no understanding of. I'd quite like to learn a little along the way. So, first things first: 1. Before I do anything at all I'm going to have a play about with all the various settings that come as standard, just to get used to the phone itself (Sorry paul :) ) 2. I will then hopefully change the ROM to a better one. I can find the various threads with how to do it, and probably follow them through. I know a lot of settings may vary depending on the current config of the phone, but what is generally thought to be the best ROM to use at present? Preferably something stable that allows me to add more and more apps and eye candy as I get used to things. So firstly change the ROM. 3. Next I'd like to change some of the themes available on here. I really want to wind up my girlfriends sister and want to get a lookalike iPhone theme and do some MMSing from it. And forward the odd text to her. Unfortunately I'm not sure if I need various things or if they will or wont work together. I'm not sure what the whole Manilla thing is really (2D Touchfile)? I could install it I think but I'm not 100% what it offers. The same with SPB and S2U2? Winterface? With all the above I'm a little bit confused as to what I really need and what I dont. And if ones installed then it will affect the other. 3. Next I think I'd like to install a game or two and chill out :D 4. Then i'll try to get round the various minefields of the GPS and such like. I'm not used to having internet on all the time. I think thats enough really for now - before my head explodes. Oh, I might actually use it as a phone as well. So if any of you experts fancies taking some time and pity on a newbie and walk him through the whole experience then it would be much appreciated. Many thanks in advance.
Guest bpivk Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 (edited) Well it's true that there is a lot to read at first but you'll get the hang of it once you get your phone. Then a lot of the settings/apps will make it more clear. I agree with Paul though. As soon as you try out your new phone update it's firmware or go to a service center so that they can update it for you. This will solve a lot of wifi, gps,... issues. You asked what you need and what you don't. Well you don't need anything or everything. Win Mobile is customizable so you can use the default samsung widgets or winterface, spb, manila. These programs will make your phone more/less finger friendly. You'll have to check them out and decide whinch one of them you like or if you like the default widgets more. S2U2 is only a locking aplication. So you'll have to get the phone and then test it. I own this phone for umm 4 months now and I just decided what i want it to look like and do. :) To sumarise: - get the phone - play with it for a day and decide what it's missing - decide what it should look like - flash the firmware (if it's a i900 not i910 phone) - install some apps to have the features you're missing - play away Edited January 22, 2009 by bpivk
Guest Natsirt Posted January 23, 2009 Report Posted January 23, 2009 Yup the first thing you should do is to play around with it first =) try out the widgets and different today screens (if you have them, assuming your omnia is an i900 model and not i910) Try out the "bulk" of the stuff first, like all the main apps and functions already on the phone.. then get down to the smaller things like personalisation.. By then you should be quite familier with your omnia and you can start to tweak it and see what you like and what you dont like, then search on the forums here for apps and ROMs that will suit your needs. I recommend you try out everything on the phone (or at least most of it) before you update to a new ROM because you never know if the new ROM has deleted something you could've really liked! Enjoy your Omnia! :)
Guest OzzyW Posted January 23, 2009 Report Posted January 23, 2009 What I've been doing is: 1 - Play with it :) checking all the standard functions and settings .. what you usually do with a new phone! 2 - check ROM version! (I was very displeased with battery life at first... A ROM update did miracles for me) 3 - Install GPS software (iGO8 - very nice !) 4 - Started customizing. I switched from standard WinMo to iFonz to Winterface to SPB and back to WinMo :D 5 - Installed games! and still looking for more :) (I wonder if the racing games listed in a big post here where it states playable with accelometer means something similar like this Have fun with your Omnia! I haven't put it down since I've gotten it ;) The misses wonders who it's gunna be sometimes :/ :P Cheers!
