Guest gravityz Posted January 27, 2009 Report Posted January 27, 2009 if have been on my new vodafone connection for a week now i have unlimited data connection so i keep everything on all the time before i had data i had problems with gps slow fix Enabling the download of the XTRA.bin file eaither from wifi or activesync did not make things better. disabled logging in the registry disabled XTRA.bin download made it a little better. now that i have a permanent data connection i enabled XTRA again and guess what instant fixes, even when i have not used the gps for lets say 3 days. this proves it the xtra.bin downloaded over the gsm network(3G, HSDPA) is different than he one downloaded through wifi or activesync somehow it uses the gsm to locate were it is(like googlemaps) and doenloads the appropriate data in the xtra.bin this really proves that these assisted gpsses really need a data connection i tried this before with gprs but somehow i did not get the results i am getting now it is really fast. it has a fix before igo8 is even finished plotting a route when it plotted the route it jumps instantly to the position i am.
Guest aleis Posted January 27, 2009 Report Posted January 27, 2009 sounds like aGPS. but i am a CDMA verizon guy :)

I have a constant internet connection and I can't get an instant fix if I didn't use GPS a few minutes before... or if I moved since then. Different people, different situations, different ROMs, different softwares.... maybe even different hardware, who knows.. =different results.

I had exactly the same problem also in the Netherlands. I purchased my Omnia in October (probably the same time as you did). Well here in Holland you can get the phone 3 months before your old contract ends. So I could use my new Vodafone sim (with data) since this week and I get instant fixes now aswell. Before I had a T-Mobile sim and took ages before it found any gps satelites, sometimes it could take like 15 till 30 min so I'm glad it's all cleared up with this dataconnection, so you don't need a dataconnection but it just gets a quicker fix with it.
