Guest david_inuk Posted January 27, 2009 Report Posted January 27, 2009 (edited) Has anybody tried updating their Orange branded i780 to Windows Mobile 6.1 using the Samsung release available on thier website? If yes, was it smooth sailing, and did you have to install all your software all over again? Thanks in advance! David Oh, the link for the Orange phone is here (http://www.samsungmobile.com/support/i780/uk/subBv_xp.jsp) for version number BVGK3 Edited January 27, 2009 by david_inuk

David Oh, the link for the Orange phone is here (http://www.samsungmobile.com/support/i780/uk/subBv_xp.jsp) for version number BVGK3 Yeah same here - new things i noticed over the original ORANGE ROM: Enhanced GPS options available -faster position by data download Mouse control - now holding the button down scrolls and/or selects Advanced Wifi options to turn off Wifi after specified time. New Samsung today layouts - but cant be used with other plugins "Idle Mode Text" today plugin - not sure what it does though New task manager - views apps and memory usage or processes SMS conversations (threaded) IE changes - Zoom out, allows scrolling up/down page. Opera 9 installed by default Toggling off the screen during music play in WMP - now stays off when the next songs starts and If a call received during A2DP and the screen turns off(after i.e 20 secs) - music resumes correctly through headphones and not via phone speaker Noticed new file association for zip files. Opening a zip file launches "zip mobile" to extract files. ...device does seem quicker overall - just annoying to have to reinstall all my software again. Matt Edited January 31, 2009 by matt1971
Guest fhaines Posted January 30, 2009 Report Posted January 30, 2009 Question. Im in the U.S. using an unlocked i780. Would flashing this rom lock it to Orange? Also, am I correct when saying this is an English language rom? Also, am I correct when saying this is an English language rom? Thanks, fhaines Hi, Not sure re locking to Orange. The main ROM download is from Samsung, however you have to install a Samsung modem driver before starting the update. During the upgrade, the process seems to download additional files - however I dont know if these are specifcally the Orange files or additional Samsung files. It is an English ROM, from what I can tell. Hope this helps. Matt

Thanks, fhaines Updating to the Orange version of 6.1 will not lock your handset to Orange (and if it does, there are easy ways to unlock it). However, you will not be able to update your software version unless you are willing to use a hex editor to change the .exe file so that it does not reject your software version. You do so at your own risk - I have updated my handset (it took a couple of attempts) and am using it on Voafone in the UK. I don't think it has made much difference, and I still rate the i780 as a very disappointing piece of equipment.
Guest Mareka Posted February 2, 2009 Report Posted February 2, 2009 (edited) I flashed it new Orange ROM to my i780 (before I have ROM for Singapore). All working OK, but big problem with IM+, Bombus or Resco Photo Viewer Pro. When start one from it program and the screen is OFF, after few minut crash it program with error report for Microsoft. Anybody have same problem? EDIT: it problem makesĀ I NewsBreak!!! Even when NewsBreak is Off (without any updating of RSS) and I started IM+, after few minutes I have the same error with text, that crash IM+ and NewsBreak too (but NewsBreak was at this moment not running or upgrading RSS!!!). When I deleted NewsBreak, all is OK Edited February 3, 2009 by Mareka

Guest Deadslow Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 Hi, First post from a total newb... My phone is presently locked to Orange. I want to update to WM6.1 with an official ROM now available, but get rid of the Orange branding as I don't like the "adapted" software. I can pay to unlock the phone, but I don't know what other ROM is available (I don't know the names of other official ROMS), or whether anything other than BVGH1 will work on the phone or whether any other ROM will be accepted for upgrade. I hope that's vaguely clear. Can anyone help please? Thanks.
Guest Zephie Posted February 14, 2009 Report Posted February 14, 2009 Yeah I've updated my orange phone, was very much a smooth operation. I used SPB Backup and after upgrading reinstalled my applications from that. It copes with 'ROM upgrades'.
