Guest Chic0 Posted January 30, 2003 Report Posted January 30, 2003 I read the Danish translation of details for the DK Update. Before now I was already willing to install the uk update when it came out but after reading the DK details, I think i'll have to change my mind id the two bugs are present: a) Phone will crash if keylock on and txt is received. ;) Can no longer edit priofiles. What sort of rubbish is that! What do they think they are playing at. I mean, I can live with the current bugs in the phone. I accept that this phone is the first of its kind and all that and bugs are to be expected, but when you pay over £100 for something you expect it to work. I think its quite shocking that they can get away with this sort of thing as well. Anyway enough of me bitching. I'm just hoping the UK update will not include the above bugs. If so, I will definately go about unlocking it so I can play Tetris etc, and Orange can stick their update where the 'Sun don;t shine'!
Guest Lojt Posted January 30, 2003 Report Posted January 30, 2003 The 'b' bug is only active if you have chosen the danish language setting...
Guest uczmeg Posted January 30, 2003 Report Posted January 30, 2003 Orange could easily have released the UK update at the same time as the Danish one. I'm pretty sure the reason they didn't is that they thought they would use the much smaller Danish market for a bit of 'live' testing and piss off a lot less people if it didn't work properly! The delay in the UK launch is probably (hopefully) to see what is wrong and fix it before it reaches the masses. Cheers Marc

The so called bugs you mentioned are probably due to people in the UK installing the Danish version with non-UK settings. It is certainly nothing to get all steamed up about when we don't even have the UK update yet. I wish people would just be patient and wait for the UK update, before making judgement. Also, why wait until the update to unlock your phone ? ..The uncertified programs are here now, and they work great ;)
Guest Chris b.a.r.f. Posted January 30, 2003 Report Posted January 30, 2003 The 'b' bug is only active if you have chosen the danish language setting... I'll edit my translation to include this info as an addendum - suppose Orange DK didn't think it was worth adding as it's aimed at DK-users
Guest Chris b.a.r.f. Posted January 30, 2003 Report Posted January 30, 2003 Orange could easily have released the UK update at the same time as the Danish one. I'm pretty sure the reason they didn't is that they thought they would use the much smaller Danish market for a bit of 'live' testing and piss off a lot less people if it didn't work properly! You reckon? Well, mate, I'm gonna put you right here - I'm a brit living in Denmark and I can tell you that the danes are possibly far less likely to put up with a dodgy update than the brits, for a number of reasons. The mobile phone market here is *far* more competitive than that of the UK - something in the region of 70% of the Danish *population* have a mobile phone (source: http://www.mobilebest.subnet.dk/_676316.html) - and Orange DK just can't afford to "piss people off" as you so quaintly put it. We have at least 8 companies fighting over a small but tech-aware customer-base and Orange DK has been losing money hand-over-fist these last couple of years; they can ill-afford more problems right now so I'm surprised that they let these bugs slip through and believe that they really weren't in the slightest aware of them. Stinks of dodgy beta-testing but that's another thread. I suspect that the update was a little rushed due to the fact that the SE P800 has been available here officially for these past 3 weeks.... The fact that the danish market is a small one per se doesn't mean that we're country-bumpkin guinea-pigs for the British update. A small market does *not* equal an insignificant one; quite the opposite - the small market will often be a battleground simply as a matter of pride for the companies concerned. Orange DK are right in the middle of a big damage-limitation excercise for the new software; just read the popups on http://orange.dk/spv/update Edited: seems I got the wrong end of Marc's stick (so to speak ;) ) - sorry for my being a little trigger-happy, Marc.
Guest uczmeg Posted January 30, 2003 Report Posted January 30, 2003 Whoa! Hold on a second, I'm not getting at the Danish in any way. I'm really sorry if it seemed like I was. Personally I think Britain sucks in too many ways to mention and much prefer the many of the attitudes found in mainland Europe. Admittedly I had no idea on the state of the Danish market. All I meant was that from a business point of view it makes sense to release something with potential to go wrong in a market where there are a lot less phones to see how it goes rather than unleash it where the most phones are. Cheers Marc
Guest Chris b.a.r.f. Posted January 30, 2003 Report Posted January 30, 2003 OK, point taken - I'll leave the post there though, purely as a point of interest ;) Let's be honest here - from a business point of view it'd make sense to release something that works, full stop  Nokia used to manage it back in the good old days (my ace old 7110 springs to mind), as did Siemens with the SL45. It seems to have become acceptable for manufacturers to palm half-baked shite off on the consumer, though we're maybe just as guilty ourselves of course; we buy these products that quite clearly aren't ready for release then we all go "yes! fing ace! update released!" when the manufacturer corrects a fault that we'd never have put up with 5 years back....and the SPV in it's original state is surely proof that people (us  ) will buy *anything*
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted January 30, 2003 Report Posted January 30, 2003 Play nice and shake hands ;) there that's better  on another subject I agree with you Chris the 7110 was one hell of a phone only beaten by my 6250 I regret ever selling it but my collection of old mobiles was getting a bit big.
Guest Chris b.a.r.f. Posted January 30, 2003 Report Posted January 30, 2003 on another subject I agree with you Chris the 7110 was one hell of a phone I palmed mine off on to a skint student mate of mine. It's still going strong, never been for a service, repair or anything. Aye, them were 't days, when quality came in't box
Guest PsychoDave Posted January 30, 2003 Report Posted January 30, 2003 Too right, that was a phone and for the time it was way stylish......but it couldn't play doom.......and we thought snake was the cutting edge. ;)
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted January 30, 2003 Report Posted January 30, 2003 But then came snake two and like all sequels went down hill ;) At least I got £50 for my 7110, sold it to a guy at work who screwed up our redundancy package
