160 character SMS and SMS Backup

I've read lots of posts saying a counter character counter is needed for the spv, whicc indeed it does. The way in which i normally estimate 160 characters is by only writing to the penultimate line of the first screen. That is leaving the last line blank which seems to be about 160 characters.

Also i found that if i edit SMS's i've recieved and select postpone send, they are copied to the draft folder. This then creates a file in a directory under application data(can't remeber which one) with a file extension mbf.The file name is a long series of random number and letters. Copy this to your PC and rename it to a txt file and it can be read in notepad.

Hope that helps someone ;)

Yeah, I found that, I also found that tha MAPI folder contained copies of SMS's I deleted last year!

The MAPI folder stores the text content of your messages from the drafts and sent items folders, and the files are linked to the main message database in IPSMcemail.vol. The random looking filename is the key that links the text file to each message in the database. Bizarrely the phone stores the contents of your inbox in cemail.vol, as well as all the message details for the files in MAPI folder - I never will understand M$'s logic!

Agreed!! Don't see why there's a need for MAPI files when deleting them has no effect on my Inbox.. Though I noticed that not every Sent Item creates a file. Ususally it is txts that are over 160 chars and are split into 2 and emails/system notifications and stuff like that. Normal SMS's don't usually leave a copy of themselves in MAPI folder. Ermm - guesswork I'd say.
