GPRS hmm now here we go again......

Does using MS Messenger constitute mb or kp's of usage towards your chosen GPRS allowance? (hope that makes sense)

Does checking for and not receiving email also count?

In theory I am inclinded to say yes due to the fact that packets of data are transfered to/from your spv when performing such tasks although they are merely requests rather than actual user intended usage.

Also does keeping GPRS on so that it reads a small GPRS symbol in top right of screen also count as usage at the moment i stay offline and connect when needed!!!

lastly if the above is yes in any way how do orange govern the usage amount in size of data procured by doing this?

Has anyone else thought about this?

just to add on a question - could someone who has GPRS counter post rough usage amounts for the various devices (streaming radio, msn, leaving gprs online etc..)

I am going to get the counter but got my first bill the other day and couldn't believe that i'd used around 50mb! just wanna know what it was that got it so high

cheers

It doesn't make sense to me, no idea what you're on abiout. Do you mean MS Messenger? MSN Hotmail?

Orange still has to send messages to and from your e-mail server. It costs them money and so it's gonna cost you. It should be pretty small amounts though...

If you are not sending/receiving data then no it don't cost. However the phone is set to hang up the GPRS connection by default so if you have this open then the chances are you're using something (see the link below about messenger).

Check out here for MSM costs (they seem a lot!):

And you can bet your bottom dollar that streaming anything is damn expensive!

Any data transferred or received contributes to your usage allowance, but staying connected and not receiving anything does not.

pjh: Streaming could be the main cause of your usage being high.

Bazz: You beat me to it ;)

Ok how good is the GPRS counter then? (Really) Have you got it? If so do you think it was worth it?

Try the demo! I haven't bought the full version coz I'm waiting to see if Orange give us some sort of way of checking (e.g. phoning 150). Not too worried until the "unlimited" deal runs out.

when u stream does the GPRS counter register what ur using?, the reason i ask is that when i rung orange they told me that there was no way that THEY could measure what i was using.

Judging by my bill this is a lie, and they do have someway of measuring

Yes the GPRS counter measures all data coming in and or going out of the phone. The only issue is that I think it counts MMS data aswell - though I can't be sure. Do a search to check. MMS is technically using GPRS, but it is charged seperately (40p a message not matter what the size, or something like that).

Orange currently have no way of telling you how much you've used. They do measure it, but you can't see it until bill day.

That's true. Until your bill is raised there is no way of checking your telephone bill, let alone GPRS usage.

Its not too hard to work out the data received when streaming music and such; just do a quick sum in your head for the bit rate and time you are streaming. Its not gonna be 100% accurate but at least it will give u a rough idea.

MMS is sent via GPRS so it is gonna affect your data counters and so these are not hugely accurate, i suppose, if u r an optimist then u know that ur GPRS usage will always be less that your data counter reading! ;)
