How about creating some sort of plugin that makes it possible to place two (or more) plugins next to eachother in XML? Wouldn't that be kinda cool?

don't know about placing 2 normal plugins beside each other.

You could try and write a super plugin that did the 2 tasks you want beside each other. But then, badly written plugins will harm battery life and generally piss everyone off... just look at the Orange message count plugin.
