Hi, I am new to Omnia..

I need some help with GPS feature of this phone..

I have successfully installed Garmin Mobile XT 5 + basefile + support files..

My questions : Do I need to find and install a map of specific country that I want to use (e.g. Australia map since I live in Australia)?

I am aware that there Garmin XT has 2 'type' of maps, i.e. NT and Mapsource map. What is the difference of using NT and Mapsoucre?

I also notice that when I am on battery source, after 1 minute idle, my Omnia turned off (black screen) and this causes the GPS turned off as well? If this is true, it wont do any good then when we use the phone as car navigation.. =(

Thanks ahead

I have successfully installed .... but not learnt how to use the software and have not even bothered to configure it, as I should, so cannot be aware that there is a backlight always on option.

Mapsource, installs on a PC, and allows you to pick and choose the parts of the map that you want and transfer them to the PPC. In Mapsource there are quite a few other things that you can do. Garmin site should explain this better. NT maps similar but cannot be edited like Mapsource ones. Since you only want it for navigation, just get the NT one.

Yes of course you have to: for navigation you need a detailed map of the area you are interested in. And of course needs to be activated (usually when you buy it you receive the activation code.. for alternative methods use google :D )

You are doing a bit of confusion... Mapsource is a Garmin PC program that displays the map on a PC and (among other functions) allows you to install on your device only the parts of the maps you are interested in.

The maps have different names, usually City Navigator (e.g. City Navigator Europe NT 2009).. NT refers only the version of the CD: new Garmin PNA and Garmin Mobile XT use the NT version (basically only older Garmin models use the non NT version).

I also notice that when I am on battery source, after 1 minute idle, my Omnia turned off (black screen) and this causes the GPS turned off as well? If this is true, it wont do any good then when we use the phone as car navigation.. =(

You can change the settings within Garmin Mobile XT program itself: just go to Settings, Display, Backlight override and chose the option you prefer. :)

Read the instructions of the Garmin Mobile XT (or use the help, the ? at the top of the main screen). You can find almost all the answers you need :)

another question: how can we determine best ports n baud rate for our device? currently im using COM3 and COM9 with baud rate 9600.. havent tried if it can lock.. since i just finished installing ..

any help will be appreciated..

OOT, what does 'M' in PhoneBook (bottom right) mean? my guess is Sex of the contact.. if so, how to change?

Thank you. =)

Use COM3 and leave the default baud rate: it works fine.

M stand for Mobile (W for Work, H for Home, E for Email, etc.)

:D :) :)

omg didnt think that LOL ;)

thx for ur advice.. I can get satellites now - outdoor of course hehe

however, the signal I got only medium in Garmin Mobile XT - 3 bar out of 5.. is this good enough for navigation ? :P

I tried my GPS navigation with Garmin Mobile XT 5 when I was on/inside a bus (with 3 bar out of 5 signal strength), and it seems that the car on the map (inside Garmin) did not 'run' smoothly - feel lag .. so that position of the car (in the software) is few seconds behind the actual location of me/bus. Is it supposed to be like this?? If so, its kinda useless for navigation ..

Please advice. Thank you :(
