Film around Screen Remove?

Hey, I can see a small clear film that is on my phone on the right and left of the screen. I scratched it with my nail thinking it was just food or paste that was stuck to the silver part of the phone but then it came apparent that there was a clear film surrounding the screen on the the right and left side. Is this supposed to be there for grip or any other purpose or is it just packaged that way by samsung like the screen and should be taken off?
