Guest zabique32 Posted February 20, 2009 Report Posted February 20, 2009 Found on xda forum. Do you think that it will be released ?
Guest cobrica Posted February 20, 2009 Report Posted February 20, 2009 Looks cool i hope it will be :(
Guest 3shirts Posted February 20, 2009 Report Posted February 20, 2009 (edited) Shame he clearly hasn't used an Omnia before as he doesn't know how to take a friggin photo! Annoying as I would have liked to see how quickly it processes a photo or video. It did look good though, apart from the widgets it seemed very fast and smooth Edited February 20, 2009 by 3shirts
Guest Akshay_LP Posted February 20, 2009 Report Posted February 20, 2009 Wow thats great news! That probably means Android for omnia will be possible. Why isn't this more famous?? Seriously, I would LOVE to have that, or Android for that matter. Damn, this is great, developers should be on this already.
Guest TheDrizzle Posted February 20, 2009 Report Posted February 20, 2009 Agreed... it almost seems like it's a fake. If there was truly an open-source alternative OS that ran on the Omnia, I would have guessed it would be more prevalent... more then just some youtube video.
Guest taril Posted February 20, 2009 Report Posted February 20, 2009 This video is about the new samsung winmo environment. That is all.
Guest zabique32 Posted February 20, 2009 Report Posted February 20, 2009 This video is about the new samsung winmo environment. That is all. Bullshit... B) read this http://www.phonescoop.com/articles/article...=254&p=1894 I'm so excited :(

If there was truly an open-source alternative OS that ran on the Omnia, I would have guessed it would be more prevalent... more then just some youtube video. That article posted above, I think explains the reason really. LiMo isn't a full OS in itself, it is the kernel and underlying 'engine'. The manufacturers still need to build their own GUI over the top of it. That means Samsung has to build it's TouchWiz interface and get it perfected before they'll release a ROM to the market. It would take some serious work for an enthusiast to build an entire GUI on the barebones LiMo frame. Samsung being a professional company wouldn't want to make a beta release and will most likely not make anything available until they can bundle it on a new phone thus getting some sales out of it too. This video is about the new samsung winmo environment. That is all. Did you even watch the video? That isn't WinMo and the article posted above gives plenty of details on the LiMo project. Perhaps a little research is called for before posting your 'facts' Edited February 21, 2009 by 3shirts
Guest Voltron8Myhat Posted February 21, 2009 Report Posted February 21, 2009 (edited) I think somebody from LiMo had better make a video. People are going to see this fool trying to use Linux on a WinMo device and think the LiMo platform is absolute shite (judging by speed, etc...). I'm glad they're working on LiMo, but they had better do some damage control quick! Edited February 21, 2009 by Voltron8Myhat
Guest Akshay_LP Posted February 21, 2009 Report Posted February 21, 2009 It's legit, no doubt. I've been really disappointed with WM6.5. All MS has been doing from WM5 to WM6.1 is providing superficial upgrades which aren't that great either. http://mwc.limofoundation.org/index.php/demos You can check out the samsung demo over there. And here: http://mwc.limofoundation.org/index.php/downloads in the video, they specifically mention a quote from Sammy's spokeperson embracing WinMo. And the fact that they already developed the vid player, the touchwiz UI and a lot of stuff, means that we may see an official upgrade. We should contact Samsung and LiMo and tell them about our readiness to this maybe, put more pressure.
Guest taril Posted February 21, 2009 Report Posted February 21, 2009 (edited) Bullshit... :D read this http://www.phonescoop.com/articles/article...=254&p=1894 I'm so excited :( B) :P :D What do you think, why didnt they give the omnia to anyone to test it on the conference???? :P :D :D that was just an environment, not a whole linux system. Its so early to be happy with linmo. linux is an open system, i only use it, why dont the share it, what you think? ist so fake. samsung failed with android too. linmo would be a great choice because of is language is C/C++ and you can modify its source. Guest bobobird Posted February 21, 2009 Report Posted February 21, 2009 No doubt a very exciting (and good) development. But linmo, android (and to some degree winmo) all face the same problem - the need to support a very big range of different hardware and the ensuing driver support. The iphone does not have this problem since there is only 1 hardware config to deal with. Symbian too does not have this problem and it supports a very vast range of hardware. Perhaps the mobile linux variants could learn something from Nokia.
Guest Diggedy Posted February 21, 2009 Report Posted February 21, 2009 I spent most of the time laughing at the "really fast camera" :(
Guest fane Posted February 21, 2009 Report Posted February 21, 2009 (edited) I spent most of the time laughing at the "really fast camera" :( In my opinion the vid showed a very "similar" version of winmo that we have now.Im not an expert but didnt seemed a linux enviroment. Guest HugoEgon Posted February 21, 2009 Report Posted February 21, 2009 if this is based on linux, doesn't it need to be available for public (for free)?
Guest Akshay_LP Posted February 21, 2009 Report Posted February 21, 2009 (edited) I just contacted LiMo for allowing customers to test it. Lets see what they have to say. Although it is highly unlikely they'll do so just on my request, atleast we'll get to know their intentions. I advice you guys to do the same to create more pressure/incentive in them to do whatever the little they can. I really want something other than WinMo now, and the future of WinMo on omnia doesn't look so bright, so lets catch on to whatever else is there. Linux, LiMo or Android would be a refreshing sight on the omnia. Lets hope for some progress on this guys. Edited February 21, 2009 by Akshay_LP
Guest 3shirts Posted February 21, 2009 Report Posted February 21, 2009 if this is based on linux, doesn't it need to be available for public (for free)? No, there are plenty of Linux distributions for PC which are not free (RedHat for example). It is all down to what has been built on top of the kernel. Since this is a LiMo frame wih the Samsung GUI on top, Samsung can control release and price (though I expect it will be free)

Limo provides the base OS as open source, Samsung adds it's stuff in there, drivers, UI, and keeps it closed. Do you think they want the competition to know what's under the hood? Same as with closed source drivers for linux, Nvidia vs. Ati/AMD, they don't want to show the source code, they distribute binaries when they're ready. All limo foundation can give you is the base os, if you want the rest you have to bother Samsung for it. Edited March 6, 2009 by TdhAndy
