Guest Lucavi Posted February 22, 2009 Report Posted February 22, 2009 (edited) I found myself at work today with a computer sans wireless internet card and a nearby unsecured wireless network. I thought it would be great to connect my phone to that wifi network, share that connection via my USB cord and use unrestricted internet. Typically to do any kind of Internet Connection sharing (tethering) you have to install MS ActiveSync on the desktop and sync your Omnia with it. That's too risky. After some internet searching I found modem drivers for the Omnia. They didn't work for this situation. After more searching I found how to share any internet connection on my phone WITHOUT INSTALLING STUPID ACTIVESYNC! Credits to relux from the link below. Download the 2 files from this link, and follow the instructions. I put a little more detail into their guide below:http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=12783 GUIDE 1) A hotfix must be installed. Run update.exe from the update folder of kb909394-windowsxp-rndishotfix (You do not need to restart, you can safely check the "Do not restart" box.) If it is already installed the installer will tell you and then automatically exit. 2) Start Internet Sharing on your phone and plug the USB cord in. 3) If/when prompted for drivers(Found new hardware SGH-i900) you'll have to point the installer to search in a "specific location" which is whereever you put the "rndis_as45_drivers" folder you downloaded. It will install the omnia as "Windows Mobile based internet sharing device blah blah..." 4) If you plan to use it with other ICS programs, like WMWiFiRouter (which I did) turn off Microsoft's ICS, leaving the USB cord connected, and it will prompt you install the drivers from step 3 again. Windows may need to install it twice. Tada! You're done With WMWiFiRouter you can easyly share a WiFI connection from your phone to the desktop. Worth the $ in my opinion. You can also try This. Post # 4. Otherwise, you can use Internet Connection sharing from your phone to share a GPRS connection. Free No more need to install activesync! Edited February 24, 2009 by Lucavi
Guest Lucavi Posted February 27, 2009 Report Posted February 27, 2009 If you keep getting "Cannot install hardware- cannot find file specified" in the setup wizard, with this or any USB device do this: Go to the Start Menu» Run and type "regedit" Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion With CurrentVersion Highlighted, go to the Edit menu and select New » Key Name the key RunOnce - Leave everything else about the key alone. This allowed everything to be installed correctly on a computer that was having issues with this, but it was having issues with most USB devices.
