Guest Digame Posted February 25, 2009 Report Posted February 25, 2009 WM 6.1 with no data connection: From what I understand GPStest must be running in order for, in my case, GPSVP to acquire a satellite signal. That is my situation and others from what I read on the forums. Is there a way to run a GPS program on the i617 without first launching GPStest?

Gps test isn't needed on 6.1, just use google maps and check GPS and you are good to go. Edited February 25, 2009 by bplease
Guest darklordofthesith Posted March 22, 2009 Report Posted March 22, 2009 Yeah, it's not needed to startup your gps. Whenever I use garmin xt, it always launches the gps.It just turns itself on when the correct application is going to use it. It took me a while to get it to work. I changed something in the windows gpstest and it made the difference. Now I lock on at least 6 satellites mostly 8 though. I use the garmin alot and it works well if you have a unlimited data plan. But the data plan is not neccessary for the gps to work nor garmin. I use it to find out what is in the area when I travel, lodging food gas ect. But the gps works great.

So where did you get Garmin XT? From my understanding the Garmin maps is like $50+ on Ebay, which I don't mind paying. But I am not sure where to get Garmin XT for the i617. I'd like to try it cause the maps are easier to work with. I wish I could learn how to import the opensource maps to my unit but that was a total failure for me.
Guest Christien Posted May 22, 2009 Report Posted May 22, 2009 I have the 617 and have been running gps without any additional software, just garminxt. I also dont have a data plan. Ive used this with 6.0 and 6.1 and they have both worked just the same. I dont know where to get a legitimate copy of garmin. It does take sometimes 10-15 minutes for my blackjack to get gps satellites, but only if I havent used it in a while. I did use gmaps with the 617 and got it working but had to get the com port thing setup first. My favorite still though is garminxt with a bluetooth gps receiver.. gets a signal in less than a minute almost always.
Guest aronlou Posted July 7, 2010 Report Posted July 7, 2010 use beelinegps,u can find satelites quickly. generally,i use no more 10 seconds to find 10 satelites, and in 30 seconds i will find my place in the maps.
