Guest miles_muso Posted February 26, 2009 Report Posted February 26, 2009 So many posts are about weather: the icons, the positioning, the display. Most today or now screen skins are dominated by or at least give up half the screen to a weather display. I work on a cruise ship and travel from country to country, but at no time have I found that I DESPERATELY need to know what the weather will be. If it's cold when I get there, it's cold. If it's hot, it's hot. I can't change it! And if I'm not in the UK, why do I need to know the weather in the UK? (especially when 500 cruise passengers seemingly revel in telling me how cold it was back home!) Seriously: why do we care so much?
Guest 3shirts Posted February 26, 2009 Report Posted February 26, 2009 It is a fair point. I didn't have a weather app on any of my previous phones and the rare times I wanted to know (if I was going for a long hike or away for a weekend somewhere) I could just jump on one of the many mobile-friendly weather sites on the internet. Now I have A WinMo device I too seem to feel like a weather app is essential and must be on or one click away from my home screen! I even nearly paid for Spb weather the other day and had to stop myself and think, WTF are you doing!
Guest Natsirt Posted February 26, 2009 Report Posted February 26, 2009 Technology is so abundant these days, just jump onto a computer and look it up on google or yahoo :(

Completely agree, it's ridiculous but also very British for us to be obsessed by the weather. They say if 2 Brits got stuck in a lift, the only thing they'd be able to talk about is the weather :( The other thing too though is that the weather in the UK is so volatile that trying to forecast it with any degree of accuracy is somewhat of a black art! You only have to watch GM:TV to realise that it takes no skill, knowledge or competence to present the weather.
Guest leethesparky Posted February 26, 2009 Report Posted February 26, 2009 Ive noticed the 5 day forcast on my m2d changes daily anyway its completely useless for telling me anything except what the weather is today and i dont need a weather app to tell me that!
Guest miles_muso Posted February 26, 2009 Report Posted February 26, 2009 Thank you all! I thought I was the only one! Now then...... who fancies turning off their weather apps for a week and seeing if you miss anything but the pretty icon on your screen......?
Guest jackdaniel Posted February 26, 2009 Report Posted February 26, 2009 doesn`t change anything here either...

Guest WoZZeR999 Posted February 26, 2009 Report Posted February 26, 2009 (edited) I like having weather a few clicks away. If you want to talk about what is REALLY IMPORTANT, do most of us NEED a Pocket PC/Smartphone? I'm sure most of us would be just fine (we have been for the past 20 years of cell phones) without touchscreens, gps, random other gizmos. It's all about personal preference, you don't like weather, some of us do. Edited February 26, 2009 by WoZZeR999
Guest Massive Attack Posted February 26, 2009 Report Posted February 26, 2009 sometimes its just as simple as knowing when to bring an umbrella, it may be sunny when you leave home, but rainy when you are about to go home.
Guest ronzo77 Posted February 26, 2009 Report Posted February 26, 2009 I also like the weather alerts . . . when my hat blows off, I wanna know why. Ted classic.
Guest pallen Posted February 26, 2009 Report Posted February 26, 2009 All those icons are just pretty and they change from time to time on their own through computer wizardry. What could possibly be cooler on your phone?
Guest leethesparky Posted February 26, 2009 Report Posted February 26, 2009 its completely useless but i cant help myself i look at it and update it everyday .. id like to think it gives me a clue when im going to be able to get my motorbike out in this sad uk weather but its never right and always changes still i update it and look at it! i cant help myself :(
Guest bigg83 Posted February 26, 2009 Report Posted February 26, 2009 I agree that its just as easy to just look out of the window, but as you have the omnia you like me you want an all in one device where you can get all your information in one place. Am I right?
Guest bobobird Posted February 27, 2009 Report Posted February 27, 2009 Some like it, some do not - leave it at that... 17 posts about absolutely nothing
Guest 3shirts Posted February 27, 2009 Report Posted February 27, 2009 (edited) Some like it, some do not - leave it at that... 17 posts about absolutely nothing How is it looking up there on your high horse? The whole point of this thread is that the OP was interested to know who else shares his opinion, it's not like anyone is trying to prove weather apps are necessary or unnecessary. If you aren't engaged by the topic, don't read it and certainly don't post! Edited February 27, 2009 by 3shirts
Guest nickmoutia Posted February 27, 2009 Report Posted February 27, 2009 At first i thought yeah this is clever, but that lasted about 10 minutes. Its a good feature to show off with, I have Manila and when I first showed my mates the weather they were pretty impressed. But its good to check up on whats the weather like abroad, I have family in Mauritius, Sri Lanka and Italy. And I get pissed off to see they have a great big blazing sun, when all we get is rain or overcast skys. (I'm in UK btw) weathers ok today though, just take a look at your phones, or out the window... :( nick
Guest Turborepu Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 it all depends on what you do with it.. I drive across the country alot and i have to know what the temperature is and will be.. especially in the winter, summer not so much.. At certain temperatures ice on the road is a big factor, as well ad the possibility of traffic jams due to bad weather/accidents, so it helps to plan ahead but thats just for me.. For the most part if you live and work in the same area just stick your head out a window and see what its like.. The other reason if for checkin up on family and things of that nature like the person before me mentioned. I'm from Southern california, so most of the time it will be sunny and full of traffic jams!
Guest Devin C Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 I love my weather plugin and use it constantly for a variety of reasons: 1. Because I need to plan when I go to our outside storage facility and do not want to schedule that on a day upcoming when it is likely to rain. 2. Because by kids are in boy scouts and it is good to know whether an excursion is likely to be cancelled or wet. 3. Because when I plan my weekends with my wife or my friends it is nice to be able to see what's what over the weekend. Devin
