Guest Paul (MVP) Posted February 28, 2009 Report Posted February 28, 2009 I've just got a NC10 (again), so i'm gonna have some fun! Keep checking back to this topic for how I progress! P The Plan Quad boot Default Windows XP, Windows 7, Ubuntu 8.10 and OSX! The Current Status System: Latest BIOS installed - 04CA Windows XP: Installed, Windows Updated, Samsung Updated, all working (of course)! Windows 7: Installed, Windows Updated, in the process of getting everything working... Ubuntu 8.10: Installed, apt-get updated, in the process of getting everything working... OSX: Installed, 10.5.6 updated, not verified operation of devices yet (base install)! The Process BIOS You can download the latest BIOS from the Samsung download page. Windows XP Windows XP is installed as standard, all i've done to get started is gone through the default process (including the creation of the recovery partition), done a Windows Update to get all the latest bits, done a Samsung Update to get all the latest Samsung bits, swapped the AV for my preferred solution! Also installed: - MalwareBytes Anti-Malware (you can never be too careful!) - FileHippo Update Checker (i'm an up-to-date freak!) To Do: Pretty happy with the XP build, as it's the main supported OS! Windows 7 Windows 7 is installed from the 7000 Beta DVD, I installed it on the second partition that is there by default (the default Samsung setup splits the drive in two). I've done a Windows Update to get all the latest bits, but that's it so far! To Do: Check which devices are / aren't working, tweak as required. Install AV. Ubuntu 8.10 Ubuntu 8.10 using the standard 32 bit install DVD. I've had the Ubuntu partitioner resize my W7 partition, then i've used my bootable GParted DVD probably to tweak sizes when the install is done. I've managed to get the wifi working and the brightness keys working! WiFi: Run 'sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-intrepid'. After a reboot, the new driver loads. Old one may need to be disabled in the 'Hardware Drivers' applet. Brightness keys: Install the updated packages from https://launchpad.net/~rockclimb/+archive/ppa - to do so, add repository using 'sudo nano /etc/apt/sources/list', import the key (instructions on that page) then apt-get update / apt-get upgrade and reboot. You also need to 'sudo nano /usr/share/hal/fdi/information/10freedesktop/30-keymap-misc.fdi' and replace '<match key="/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer:system.hardware.product" contains_outof="SP55S;SQ45S70S;SX60P;R59P/R60P/R61P;Q310;X05">' with '<match key="/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer:system.hardware.product" contains_outof="SP55S;SQ45S70S;SX60P;R59P/R60P/R61P;Q310;X05;NC10">'. That should be it! To Do: Check which devices are / aren't working, tweak as required. OSX Installed OSX 10.5.4 using the WindOSX86 DVD, and installed 10.5.5 then 10.5.6 using the non combo updaters. This broke GRUB completely, so I had to reinstall it using the second post in this topic. To Do: Check which devices are / aren't working, tweak as required! Boot Menu I am using GRUB as the boot menu, with 4 seperate options for the OS. Initially XP and W7 were on one option, but I used the XP SP3 CD recovery console to rewrite the XP partitions own bootloader, then I edited /boot/grub/menu.list to add XP and W7 distinct options.
Guest Monolithix Posted February 28, 2009 Report Posted February 28, 2009 Right, sorted the bios on mine, now just trying to get W7 to install. Having issues making my external HDD bootable. In the mean time I'm rejigging my partitions, going for 15GB each for XP/Linux/OSX and the rest for W7 (for now). I was disapointed to see I couldn't boot from the SD card...
Guest Monolithix Posted February 28, 2009 Report Posted February 28, 2009 Got all the hardware up and running on Win7 now, had to use the Vista ethernet driver from the Marvell website though, grab it here: http://www.marvell.com/drivers/driverDisplay.do?driverId=101 Windows 7 looks wicked, aero is shiny and it's certainly no less speedy than XP. CPU aside it's not too bad on the WEI score either Next job is to try Kubuntu and try to get the function keys working properly on W7 (they mostly work, no funky graphic to show what option you've chosen though)
Guest Monolithix Posted March 1, 2009 Report Posted March 1, 2009 It would appear Windows 7 doesn't agree with Daemon tools, so I've just reinstalled :( I got Kubuntu booting after installing via a usb stick using the useful tools at pendrivelinux to create a USB drive "live disc". http://www.pendrivelinux.com/usb-kubuntu-8...-using-windows/ There's an Ubuntu version there too, so going to try that now, seeing as I had no choice other than to let W7 mangle grub! Incidentally, I had no wifi on Kubuntu (but had no time to look into why...)
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted March 2, 2009 Report Posted March 2, 2009 Gonna pick me up a dell 1490 wireless card so I can get WiFi in OSX... P
Guest WoD Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 I'm not far behind Paul now, having installed iDeneb from an external hard drive and setup boot_v9 to kickstart OSX from grub (exactly the same thing as Chameleon, for all intents and purposes). To install iDeneb I carbon-copy-cloned it onto a 5gb partition on an external hard drive. I first did a test install onto the second partition of said hard drive, and then took back some space from Ubuntu to install OSX on the NC10s internal hard drive. I had no end of issues getting iDeneb to boot, it wouldn't do much more than sit at a black screen with a blinking cursor. I fixed this by installing Chameleon onto the cloned iDeneb CD partiton. It worked like magic and lets me boot either the OSX installation or the install CD. Very handy! Just waiting for a Dell 1505 wireless card to install, and a kext that will fully support my touchpad (let me know if you find one, Paul) with two finger scrolling and whatnot. Now triple booting Windows XP, Ubuntu 8.10 and MacOSX (iDeneb 10.5.6) Found a driver pacakage that seemed to work nicely with the GMA950 and also enabled Quartz Extreme. Will find the link! OSX runs like a dream!
Guest Xabito Posted March 4, 2009 Report Posted March 4, 2009 Any other features that don't work with this and OS X ?? Or just WiFi that can be fixed with another Card, or even dongle?
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted March 4, 2009 Report Posted March 4, 2009 I'll let you know once i'm all installed! :( New WiFi card just arrived... P
Guest WoD Posted March 4, 2009 Report Posted March 4, 2009 (edited) New WiFi card just arrived... *envy* I managed to fix the GetHostUUIDString error by setting up a bluetooth PAN network with my MacBook Pro (which gave an agonizingly slow, albeit usable internet connection) and then following the instructions to apply the fix to the NetworkPreferences.plist that was auto-generated when I deleted my old one and rebooted. I'm still stunned at how well it all runs. Have you managed to get two finger scrolling to work? Having it in Windows but not OSX feels wrong! I just installed the 1mb driver from the Broadcom Bootcamp driver over a generic Broadcom driver installation. It installed silently, took all of 10 seconds and immediately replaced the existing driver/reconnected at 130mbps instead of the 6.5 I was getting before.... holy crap can Apple write drivers! Guest natzakaria Posted September 22, 2009 Report Posted September 22, 2009 Hi all Got me the N110 and flashed the new bios - it seem the boot process is slower than the previous BIOS - any tip what I should do to make the boot up process faster or as fast as the XXXXXX06 version? Thanks
