Guest Pidder Posted January 30, 2003 Report Posted January 30, 2003 Ey Paul, would be very cool to have a "search topic titles only" option in the search engine of this forum. Would be much more comfortable and would give us more exact results when we do searches on a specific topic. Let me know, what you think about that (not only Paul). Greets Pidder
Guest yatpeak Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 Give Paul a chance to notice your opinion, it's not as if he's on all day. Wyatt
Guest Pidder Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 Give Paul a chance to notice your opinion, it's not as if he's on all day. Wyatt I'm sorry about beeing so impatient  But it just confused me seing 40 views and no answer at all
Guest XPClone Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 Crap Idea Pidder - Only joking mate, that would be useful feature.
Guest bobroberts Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 yeah sounds good, more options is a good thing...
Guest cepheus1 Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 Yes....improvements to the search facility is definitely needed...especially as a *few* people get arsey when a question gets repeated  If you think it doesn't need improving do a search for "WildFire!" Results are totally screwed because there is a registered user with the nick "WildFire" The only trouble with Pidders suggestion is that the thread title is not always a good indicator to the information provided within the thread itself....what with add-on questions being asked within the thread which are not really connected to the original post :? But for sure....some improvements do need to be made to the search facility....IMHO ;)
Guest madu Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 Hmmm. The reason (I believe) there is no 'Topic Only' search is because often people don't bother thinking of an appropriate topic name and you end up with very usefull info under the 'I need help NOW' thread.. What I find useful is clicking on the second option under the search box: >>> Search for all terms The default one is: >>> Search for any terms or use query as entered And it returns results even if the topic only contains _one_ of the word in the quiery. So the moral is if people only search topic names we _will_ end up with even more double posts. No good. Hope that makes sense. PS: If you really need to grab _individual_ attention (like Paul's) - use PM, that will make it more likely that the person notices you wanna have a word with them specifically.
Guest Pidder Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 It s not because i want to search topic titles only. I want to be able to do this to refine searches. If i search for eg "battery" nowadays i get only crap (every single thread where someone said that he had to put the battery off the phone to reset it or such nonsense). It s clear that i wont get all the battery threads by having this option, but at least i would get some of them (which is a good start compared to the crap you get if you try it today).

I tried to pm Paul on another question but he didn't answer at all. I think his mailbox is probably spammed with huge amounts of newbie questions every day.

I think his mailbox is probably spammed with huge amounts of newbie questions every day. He he he ;) To refine search really try using more than just 'battery' - like 'battery monitor' or 'battery trick power' and select 2nd option as mentioned above - works a treat for me. I can't really disagree with you on that one but this is what you can do for now. By the way I think Paul is in Redmond (guess who's HQ there is he he) - so that's prob why he doesn't reply..
Guest Matt Whitfield Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 Hmmm yes well, I was wondering about the whole Redmond thing. Is that Paul's day job, or has he been summonded by the Borg to give advice on their phone platform? Having seen how desperate MS were to break into the phone market, and how unkeen the other mobile players were to help them, perhaps it's the latter... In which case, good luck to him
Guest madu Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 Doubt that, but he is now a MVP as far as I can see (read;)) and remember him saying s.t. about an invite to conference about SPs
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 Sadly it isn't my day job - i'm a 'Software Development Consultant' by day, and working on a very very important project atm, hence I have less time to spend on the board atm! Yep, an improved search would be cool, i'll investigate. And Pidder - don't be so impatient ;) P
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 Maybe I should add an 'about Paul' topic? ;) P
Guest madu Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 "]Maybe I should add an 'about Paul' topic? P We know too much about you allready!! Just go away :D ;) EDIT: Thought I'd make sure you understand that it's a joke b4 it's too late  :D
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 Wouldn't it be a shame to lose mod status ;) P
Guest madu Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 EXACTLY!! PS: You using a master-control tecnique here or what??
Guest someone Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 er hey Paul, about your post at the beginning of this forum, the link to PDABench.com, i've posted that yesterday already in SPV/Tanager main! (you'd better do a search before posting ;) ) Cheers
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted January 31, 2003 Report Posted January 31, 2003 Maybe I would if the search worked better ;) P
