SpbMobileShell/WQVGA SPB MOBILE SHELL SKINs Fails

I installed SpbMobileShell 2.15 to my storage card, seems to work fine. Nice stuff but what I really wanted to do was install the skins from imarche. I downloaded Release 3.2 WQVGA SPB MOBILE SHELL SKINs - WQVGA (240x400). I followed the instructions, went to SpbMobileShellSkins\Scripts and ran MortScript.exe. I assume it was successful- ".mscr and .mortrun extensions registered." Then I ran Install_WQVGA.mscr and it failed with two different messages on different attempts.

The first time the error was "Cannot find Spb Mobile Shell version 2.1.2".

The next one was "The file 'install_WQVGA' cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted certificate, or one of its components cannot be found. If the problem persists, try reinstalling or restoring this file."

Uninstalled it from remove programs, restarted. It looked like it was still on there, tapped spb menu in lower right and it gave an obvious error, dont remeber it. Copied the file from card to my documents on device, installed and got the same errors as before

Any help would be appreciated

Hard reset. Installed shell. Ran the skins from card again, ".mscr and .mortrun extensions registered." ran Install_WQVGA.mscr and it failed again with the same errors. Ugh. WTF?

I wanna kill my phone.

Hi,

Funny, Mobile shell automatically installs onto device memory. If you somehow forced it to be installed onto storage card (perhaps moved the program with SKtools or similar), it will give you errors.

So, you need to install in onto device memory, otherwise it will not work properly.

Also, make sure your downloaded copy of skin is intact.

I put the cab on the card and ran it from there but used no to tools to force it and it is listed in "remove programs" so Im gonna say it is installed in device memory. I downloaded Release 3.2 WQVGA SPB MOBILE SHELL SKINs - WQVGA (240x400) again to rule out a bad file, same two errors.

Please, don't kill your phone... We will get through this... :(

First, please double check that the SPB Shell is installed in My Device\Program Files\SPB Mobile Shell

If this is correct, try to install SPBMobileShell Skins package 3.1.1. That is what I have and it works perfect. Remove the package 3.2 first.

Let me know about yuor progress.

Thanks for the encouragement :( NFG- ran MortScript.exe, successful then the same 2 errors- "Cannot find Spb Mobile Shell version 2.1.2" first, closed it, tried again and got "Cannot find Spb Mobile Shell version 2.1.2".

As I mentioned, I have spb 2.1.5 installed.

Any version higher than 2.1.2 will work.

Go to your registry and check that in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Spb Software House 2\Spb Mobile Shell the "InstallDir" key says \Program Files\Spb Mobile Shell

That is where the Instal_WQVGA script is looking for it and gives you an error message when it is not there.

Please post where your Shell folder and skins folders are.

I installed Resco Explorer 2008 but opening the registry is not immediately obvious. :(

Registry Explorer is an add in to the Resco Explorere and sometimies has to be installed separately. In Resco Explorer go to Menu>Options>AddIns to see if MyRegistry is installed (has to have a check mark next to it). If it is there than you can click on the top bar of Resco explorer to open the folder tree and My registry will be there. HKLM is HKEY_Local_Machine

Those are the registry folders. Underneath them should be several registry keys: Build, InstallDir, Name, Version.

If they do not exist, your SPB Shell installation did not go right for some reasons. You can try going to your Mobile Shells skins folder from imarche and find and run the script SetInstallDir.mscr.

Soft reset and try Instal_WQVGA script again.

If still no luck, uninstall SPB SHell 2.1.5, soft reset and reinstall it. It should install into device memory automatically, but if it asks you, be sure yoou install there.

Good luck...

Took my brain out of the picture and used the search function in Resco Registry. It found an installdir under HKLM>software for VZNav, Resco Eplorer, Resco Reg add in, Sync Client and Clear Temp. Uninstalled it from Remove Programs, restarted. Reinstalled from SpbMobileShell.arm.cab, again. Then it got worse-under HKLM>software>spb software house2>spb mobile shell there is nothing else. I mean the folder is not expandable. No subfolders. UGH.

I have another brand new virgin i910. The plan was I would get some practice installing this stuff and not worry about reducing the phone to a molten pool of slag because I could just pour it in the box and send it back to VZW and activate the other one. Im thinking I may have reached that point now.

This morning, VZNavigator refused to authenticate my GPS service. The VZW tech said she had never seen that before.

I suppose I could reformat it (2nd time) and try again...

I did another hard reset. When I said "reformat" before, that was intentional. When I took a new one out of the box and it wouldnt react to the initial screen calibration taps, the VZW 'tech' told me to me to "reformat" it by holding down the right hard key while removing the battery, replacing the battery and then releasing the hard key. Thats the way to hard reset a Palm Treo, which Ive done 1000 times, which explains why Im in a WinMo forum now.

Anyway, after I did the hard reset, the first thing I did was install the SpbMobileShell to main memory which was "successful". Then I installed Resco Explorer and then the Resco Explorer registry add in. Under HKLM>software>spb software house2>spb mobile shell, the various subfolders were there but a search of the registry revealed no "InstallDir" anywhere. And of course the attempt to install the skins failed with the same 2 freakin errors as before in the same order.

Im thinking dousing it in gasoline and lighting it on fire might help...

Ok, broke the seal on the new one.

First thing after activation installed the shell, check.

Ran Mortscript.mscr, check.

Ran Install_WQVGA.mscr, check.

Failed, check.

Hello? Does anyone know how to fix this?

Dude, sorry nothing works for you so far.

This is a common error and in 99% of the time it happens because the SPB Shell is not installed into device memory. So steps that I recommended should have worked...

I've used this on my Dell and now on Omnia and everything worked right away...never had an issue.

Did you try rinning SetInstallDir.mscr script? I wrote about it a couple of posts before... Did it do anything?

If this did not work, lets try one last thing: we will create that InstallDir string

In resco explorer go to HKLM\Software\Spb Software House 2

You will see the Spb Mobile Shell folder there. Highlight the folder, but do not open it. Click Menu>New> String Value

In the "Name" field enter InstallDir, In the 'String' field enter \Program Files\Spb Mobile Shell

Now if you open that Spb Mobile Shell folder in the registry and scroll down you should see taht InstallDir string.

Try to run Install_WQVGA script again...

Finally, a voice in the dark. :( Thanks for checking back.

I did try running SetInstallDir.mscr on the other phone, no luck. Note: I watched the install path for the skins this last time on the new phone. It was application data\volatile\zipview\284137\spbmobileshellskins\scripts. I started drilling down and only got as far as volatile and it was empty.

As soon as I get Resco onto this phone, I will post back.

Actually what the skins pack does is just replaces your .dat in the Spb Mobile Shell folder with its own based on what you choose. Whenever you run the scrpipt and choose the skin, buttons, icons, etc it will grap specified .dat files from the skins folder and put it in your Mobile Shell folder. That is why the first thing this script does trying to find your Mobile Shell folder.

Just some FYI... :(

I did as you said. apparently, the string already exists. I ran Install_WQVGA script again and got "The file 'install_WQVGA' cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted certificate, or one of its components cannot be found. If the problem persists, try reinstalling or restoring this file." again, though I did not get "Cannot find Spb Mobile Shell version 2.1.2" this time. B)

Have I mentioned I wanna kill my phone? :(

Hi,

I had exactly this problem 2 or 3 times. Never understand why. I found a tweak solution.

Put a Mortscript shortcut in \windows\startup folder. Your problem will be solved. Only a small problem: Everytime you do a softreset you will have I little message saying that Mortscript was installed.

:P

:(

MortScript (no extension) is now in windows\start menu\programs. After a soft reset, still get "Cannot find Spb Mobile Shell version 2.1.2" As a reminder, my SpbMobileShell/WQVGA SPB MOBILE SHELL SKINs folder is on the card. Should it be in main memory, 18MB is a whole lotta memory to use.

Hi, Keep Mortscript in the original place (My storage or Sorage card as you wish but not in main memory). Only put a shortcut of Mortscript in \windows\startup and not in windows\start menu\programs.

Dont forget to do a softreset.

It will work.

no NO NO NO!!! It doesnt work. It wont work! It wont ever work!

Shortcut, check. There is now a 36 byte MortScript file in Windows\StartUp

I got the "The file 'install_WQVGA' cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted certificate, or one of its components cannot be found. If the problem persists, try reinstalling or restoring this file." message after the reset like you said. Then when I run Install_WQVGA.mscr, I get it again! :( B)

Ya hear that? Thats the sound of the slide on an H&K .40 being pulled back...

Ok, lets start from the very beginning. Please check and confirm the following:

1. Your SPB Mobile Shell program is installed in My Device\Program Files\Spb Mobile Shell

2. You DO HAVE a string InstallDir, with the string field \Program Files\Spb Mobile Shell in HKLM\Software\Spb Software House 2\Spb Mobile Shell

3. Your Spb MobileShell Skins folder is in the root of My storage (My Storage\SpbMobileShellSkins).

Also, plese answer the following:

1. Do you run the MortScript.exe file before you try Install_WQVGA.mscr script?

2. How did you transfer your SpbMobileShellSkins folder to My Storage? Did you do it through ActiveSync or through Mass storage option? Sometimes when you use ActiveSync to transfer files from PC to PDA they get corrupted due to conversion. Does not happen to often, but has happened before.

3. Do yoou have SpbMSSkins.lnk file on your Windows\Startup folder?

Let me know ASAP, so we can try to figure it out before you shoot your Omnia. BTW, it's a great device and SPB Shell is a great program, and Imarche skins as avery good and reliable add on. So its a shame that you have so much trouble with it.
