Guest G Simmons Posted March 11, 2009 Report Posted March 11, 2009 (edited) My fellow Verizon cheapskates who do not have data plans want to limit the phones access to EVDO. That’s understandable, if you don’t have a data plan Verizon charges you plenty much per KB. I realized a simple non-hack walk-around for i910 owners. Issue: Consistently EVDO gets used on my phone. I can keep from using Opera and SPB programs do their best to use free internet (wifi / bluetooth) or no internet at all. Still, when I first got the phone I went on google to find the route to a paintball field and to reserve a car -what a fool. Further, activesync email accounts automatically update themselves from-time-to-time (you cannot change the interval for activesync addresses). Non-SPB programs may also use Verizon to update themselves. I accidently managed to waste about 800kb on the first day of using this device and I do not have a data plan (I know it’s stupid to not have a data plan, but I am upgrading from a W385). What can you do to guarantee your phone never goes on EVDO unless you tell it to? Solution: Go to settings. Go to Connections. Go to Connections (the program). Go to the advanced tab and click "select netwroks." For both options select "My Work Network" instead of "My ISP." Hit OK. Bam! If you actually have a work network set up, programs will automatically try to use that instead of Verizon unless you are connected via Wifi or Bluetooth. If you do not have a work network set up, programs will fail to connect to the net until you connect with wifi or bluetooth. Either way, you don’t owe Verizon jack spit! If you need to use EVDO in a pinch, you have to go to the settings and change them back to "My ISP," giving you plenty of time to consider the money you are spending. >>>By fail to connect, I mean they will not be able to connect. You will not get any annoying "Failure!" messages. They'll just stop trying until they detect a usable connection. IE and Opera will give you the same message you get when you type an incorrect web address. Edited March 11, 2009 by G Simmons

Guest baaadandy Posted March 12, 2009 Report Posted March 12, 2009 The most important question that you bring up is how did you get the phone without a data plan? Ya lol that's a good question. My guess is he has a data plan and doesn't know it.
Guest BamDastard Posted March 12, 2009 Report Posted March 12, 2009 Or... He bought the phone elsewhere and added it to his account.
Guest Adrynalyne Posted March 12, 2009 Report Posted March 12, 2009 Or... He bought the phone elsewhere and added it to his account. Which will not activate on the Verizon network without a data plan. Maybe he found some rep to do it for him, that didn't know any better, or knew a way around the limitation.
Guest G Simmons Posted March 12, 2009 Report Posted March 12, 2009 Or... He bought the phone elsewhere and added it to his account. Yeah I bought the phone but not from Verizon because, at the time, I wasn't eligible for an upgrade. So I added the phone on a Monday, and then added the data plan later that week when I had time sit to read the difference between the two plans. Since I had a simple phone before, and a blackberry for work, I never had a Verizon data plan. I originally intended to never get data for this phone eihter because I live downtown, but I decided to stop being cheap. I was actually waiting specifically for a Verizon phone with WIFI that I liked. I NEVER had unlimited data on my blackberry. In Philly and NY-LES, if you live downtown, you only need wifi. I wanted this phone for the WIFI. There's WIFI almost everywhere I go. But then I guess it's smart to have data when I visit other places isn't it? That's why I added it. Hell it's only $30
Guest trexflyer Posted March 15, 2009 Report Posted March 15, 2009 If you can convince a rookie verizon csr to do it for you, there is a workaround for the data plan. When they remove the data plan in acss, the system will automatically add the $44.99 data plan back to the account......UNLESS they add the "pay-as-you-go-kb" feature to the acct at the same time B) Be very careful if you use this option and be sure to switch your connection settings as stated above. With a per/kb charge of $.015, 1mb will cost you $15.36. I've seen many surprised customers call-in with soiled shorts when they got a bill with a 78mb software update. I encourage everyone to pay the $30 for a data plan if they insist on having a pda phone, even though they have no business having the phone in the first place......the BB Storm has been the worst marketing gimmick in the history of cell phones, not to mention its a POS.

The ability (read "requirement") to push the whole gd screen in everytime you push a button or letter doesn't rock your socks off? The screen "clicks" mate! Isn't that the end all be all? Come on!

LMAO!! if you only knew how many calls a day i get from ppl crying that their beloved buggy pos status symbol is broken (screen stuck in "click" position or side buttons not working) you could laugh with me. i despise that phone and physically cringe when i hear the word storm
