Orange Schmorange!

Seven calls to Orange so far to set up GPRS!! Seven, and it's not even working yet! I am on first name terms with all the staff! Now, I work in IT and it's not as if I've just been happily pressing random buttons and hoping it might work. I half know what I'm doing which is more than can be said of Orange Data Support. They've all told me conflicting settings, have 'sent' me SIM updates that never arrive, and then tell me that the network reception in Central London is rubbish and I'll just have to live with it. I'm at the end of my very long tether and am going to kick off big style!

Here's my sorry tale for anyone that will listen

Got phone. Read SIM update, deleted and rebooted phone.

Little G appears (Hooray!). Fire up Internet Explorer, it dials, then comes up with a blank screen (Oh). Phone Orange six times. Advice differs on each occasion and SIM updates never arrive. Tell my carrier pigeon that he may have to come out of retirement if this keeps up. He's not happy.

My seventh call to Orange....

Call Orange 156. "Hello, my GPRS doesn't work"

"OK Madam, let me just pretend I'm pressing some buttons here for a while..... Lalala... Right, let's see. Ah here we go madam and I'll be honest with you here. I'm a complete and utter twat!"

"Right you are. Well thanks for your help. Goodbye."

I'm off to call them again now! I'm going to ask them what they think a DNS server is. Joy!

Hehe, that made me laugh, i hate any kind of technical support their all useless youll get more help from your dog. But no seriously use the internet, sites like this are extremely useful at least people who have had the problems know what their talking about!

Give orange a rest! i personally havnt had a problem with GPRS but plenty of people have!

Someone try and help, sounds like shes ready to jump on her phone!

Don't blame you for getting a bit narked about this - but take DJHope's advice and search this board for the correct GPRS settings; it may be here your SPV's playing up. If you can't find 'em here (I'm sure you will) then take a look in microsoft.public.smartphone - I'm sure they've been posted there a few times.

Try and start here:

I had problems connecting to Orange WAP via GPRS.

156 sent me a simupdate which made no difference.

Called 156 again, this time I made progress.

If anyone else is having trouble with WAP on GPRS (not CSD), these are the correct settings.

Internet connection

Orange GPRS

Work connection

Automatic

WAP connection

Orange WAP

Didn't work at first, so I turned off the phone, removed the battery for about 10 seconds. Replaced battery, powered on.

Result, Orange WAP over GPRS now works great...hope it works for you !! ;)

This works for everything for me, apart from trying to use the WAP link over GPRS for Locust.

Has anyone else had success with this?

I am now with GPRS! 8)

And it's all thanks to this forum too. I'd remembered reading a post about getting Orange to reapply the GPRS product on the account to reset all the settings and send the full update and that worked! I got 2 SIM Updates, rebooted and hey presto.

Now what do I do with it? Ok, I'm joking! Don't throw your shoes at me!

Thanks guys.

What on earth is Locust ?

details here it's a mobile SMS/GPRS community - pretty good service - uk.locust.net

I've finally managed to figure it out now. But have to go through the orangeinternet access point rather than orangewap. Could get the active dialog box to work otherwise.

People get all excited about SIM updates... and in many cases imagine that's what they're getting when they ain't. The SPV is a case in point: 156 doesn't DO "SIM Updates" for the SPV. For the Sony t68i, yes, for the Nokia 7650 yes. But there's no way one CAN be sent for the SPV (as yet!) HOWEVER, if your account didn't show the "GPRS Consumer Pack", then GPRS doesn't work *at the exchange*. If the pack is added, then the exchange is notified, and you in turn are notified with an SMS. The SMS does NOT "upgrade your SIM" - it just notifies you that your SPV is now cleared to send and recieve a GPRS signal.

I don't know where you get your information from, but I think you don't know what you are talking about !

I have an SPV.

I got a sim update from Orange 156 last week ;)

I had problems with WAP over GPRS.

Orange 156 sent me a SIM update, I had to enter a PIN number to use the SIM update.

They gave me the PIN number over the phone before the update.

Yeah, and that's the terminology that Orange used - a SIM Update. Mind you, with a name like Big Ron, I'm not going to argue!

yes im afraid i agree with xanadu they can send sim updates to SPV's and they can also send setting updates which a messages you read and save and they adjust your settings for you, - big ron sounds like you were a victim of the fob off line im afraid.

i had gprs setting issues after a 28 day replacement and received both from data to correct the issue

I had lods of probs acording to orange from when they register you gprs pack it takes up to 24hrs to go live. But as i have been told by a freind who works on 156 it can take a lot longer due to all the tech probs on there servers ie not big enough if any one is still having probs drop me a line

Heh - yep, they should tell the truth...."we're a bunch of clueless tossers who run around like headless chickens as soon as a punter rings with SPV questions" (not intended as a personal attack against spv_user's friend, just an observation based on my experiences of Orange DK's customer "service")

And why is it that there are a few people who work for Orange on the forum as well. Could be they're trying to learn about a product the Orange should have trained them in in the first place

Sorry mate... think twice, speak once.

Dunno what Orange in Denmark is like for customer service but on the whole Orange UK isn't bad. Try calling singlepoint (Vodafone) Q for 20 mins at national rate then get no help because they are just a service provider not the network so they have to refer it to the network!

Lets not have too much slagging off please!

Data Support are pretty good... dunno about the retailers tho ;)

Orange DK are OK. They're friendly, polite and utterly, utterly useless where the SPV's concerned. Their sales staff are friendly, polite and - you guessed it - utterly useless where the SPV's concerned.

They do try though. I've not needed to contact them for a while so maybe they're a bit more SPV-savvy now. Benefit of the doubt and all that.
