Guest bobobird Posted March 15, 2009 Report Posted March 15, 2009 You are not ready for all this! First get some knowledge about computers and phones and then come back for your questions. Good starting point - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ROM_image
Guest forelli Posted March 16, 2009 Report Posted March 16, 2009 (edited) And this too, by the way: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Mobile Good luck Edited March 16, 2009 by forelli

But in layman's terms, a ROM image is basically just an image of software that is flashed to your phone's memory. I'm sure that you've played a video game at least once in your life so whenever you load the game CD into the console, you are loading a ROM image into a processor. The game console then performs and executes in certain manner. Think of your phone as the console and the ROMs on this forum as the game CD's - except these are a bit more complicated than a game CD because these Omnia ROMs contain many different applications within, and they all command the device to execute in a certain way. SPB Shell is just a graphic user interface that you can purchase. I use it and it's very good! However, you don't need to operate your phone, and you cannot forgo the phone's ROM in lieu of SPB Shell. Shell is exactly what it's called - a shell program that operates in tandem with WinMo! It makes navigating through your Omnia much easier than Windows or the stock Samsung menus. I would spend some time reading through this forum, and even Samsung's Omnia site before your attempt to flash a new ROM to your phone. As the other's have mentioned already - educate yourself first. The wonderful thing about this phone is that it is almost fully customisable - provided of course you know what you're doing.
