Verizon OMNIA i910 GPS problems

Hey guys..i really need help and kinda confused. I have been reading threads about this topic but none really helped (well really solve the problems). Plus, there were other stuff in the threads and not really focusing on just the Verizon OMNIA i910 owners. So I guess hopefully this thread will do that. Alright, I have the new OMNIA i910 from Verizon for about a month now and I love it. Except for the GPS program/software/setting...whichever lol. I have tried downloading different kind of GPS apps such as GOOGLE MAPS, WINDOW LIVE SEARCH, TERRACORSSER and GARMIN XT MOBILE. I have tried to upload programs/apps that will make/help these programs to work and nothing. Im still having problems using the GPS program. The programs are running fine just not the GPS itself. Like it would not FIND MY CURRENT LOCATION...I know all my settings are set correctly. So please help....any suggestion or solution please share them to our Verizon OMNIA owners.

BTW: We have built in GPS so im not paying $10/month for the VZNavigator...its ridiculous!

well verizon locked the gps on our phones, so you have to use vznavigator unless you have an external gps device.

OK folks, you created a duplicate thread. Start here:

http://www.modaco.com/content/i9x0-omnia-h...please-help-us/

You have 52 pages of what's up with GPS on the Omnia i900 AND the i910 to read over there. The i900 and i910 are siblings and very similar(same chipset). That thread covers both phones very well. All the explanations, testing, things we've tried, etc are all in there. No way around it yet.

Different chipset due to GSM vs CMDA radios. GPS is contained on the same chipset as the radio, so they're different. But we've all been trying to do what we can. Verizon has also publically stated that they will be releasing an update to unlock the GPS (and maybe some other stuff from the European version updates.)

Timeframe is "First half of 2009" and someone has also heard "2nd quater of 09" direclty from a tech rep without hesitation.

Hey threadstarter, join the club. We've been waiting around for verizon to 'fix' the gps since December.

It makes absolutely no sense for them to be the only carrier, in the world, to disable gps for the omnia. I can get the omnia any where else in the world, and use the gps just fine.

Just another GREEDY american corporation nickel and diming the already defeated american consumer to death. I wish that verizon would go out of business like so many other big corporations in the US, such as ENRON, AIG, etc, because to me, VERIZON is just as crooked.

I say we kidnap the verizon guy

http://blogs.riverfronttimes.com/dailyrft/verizon_guy.jpg

and hold him for ransom if we dont get our unlocked gps by July 1st!

Yea i know but there seem to be too many other things going on in that thread..the thread with 52 pages! I read halfway through and im like wth? Nothing was solved...So hopefully this thread can just sum things up and just focus on this subject for OMNIA i910 for Verizon.

i think the general sentiment is to sit and wait for the update. verizon is making enough money as a whole, and i dont think they want to further alienate any smartphone users by having them switch to att / iphone over something as stupid as locking the GPS. that is, if people havent already made the switch to ATT

Nothing was solved, sir, because the fix is STILL IN PROGRESS! Sorry for yelling, but that was uncalled for. The other thread is the proper one, and has made much more progress than this duplicate, if you are willing to sift through the garbage you can find it. M Moogle has found a way to get it to work. It is not easy, and requires many restarts if you cant time it right, now all they have to do is make a program that does the timing for you, but in your impatience you did not see this. Once again, I apologise for going off the handle, but a topic should stay in its thread, rather than in 5 or 6 with nearly identical contents. I think we can consider this thread dead, so PLEASE no responses.

If you want to see your location for free, download GPSTest:

Just remember that the latitude and longitude are reversed. This is the best that we can do right now. So far no one with enough knowledge has tried to make a decent i910 GPS crack. A Verizon employee has claimed that the GPS will be unlocked in an update which will be released in the first half of this year.

That is all.

Does this work out of the box? or do you have to install skywings GPS Serv thing first?

Should work without any additional software...just keep in mind, you have to end the activesync task, it may take a bit for it to come up with agps coordinates (which you need to be connected to the network for) which may or may not be accurate, then it can take up to 10 minutes for you to get a true gps signal, which will allow you to kill the network connection. The connection is required for initial startup of the gps chip as of right now.

Just as an FYI I have successfully used the GPS in my verizon omnia. I currently am using a combination of the leaked updated 6.1 rom (new widgets) that I got from this website but that alone did not do the trick. First I went to settings, personal tab, phone, gps, change settings to location on. Then I also had to install "gpsgate2.5" (attached below) and run the wizard. I checked all outgoing ports and manually added the com8 gps multiplexer port in that program set it to i believe 112500 (also change to auto startup so u dont have to do it manually). Then this program will show a green indicator and display running ok. Then using google maps I manually configured the gps setting to that same port "com8" and same setting of 112500. Works great, suprisingly seems accurate to within a few feet. I cant wait till verizon officially lauches this software for everyone. I will try gpsgate2.5 on one of the omnias without the leaked rom and see if it works anyways.

Industrilistic - I tried the what you had mentioned. I installed the GPSGATE software, but I am a little confused. I ran the wizard and it found COM8 as the GPS port. Now how do I set the GPS software to use that port? Do I set the GPS settings to COM 8 @115200? Do I need to add another output in the GPSGATE Software?

I am currently using Google Maps. Also I have a Omina without the leaked ROM.

... Also I have a Omina without the leaked ROM.

Wont work. The GPS is encrypted in the stock i910 device.

The Leaked Rom, fixed it partially... GPS works but aGPS does not.

So I'm unless I put a New ROM on my Omnia the GPS won't work?

IF that is the case- is there a ROM out there that doesn't require a hard reset to start the process?

All ROM upgrades perform a hard reset as they clear out that memory area to load their stuff.

Just save your stuff and do it, not a big deal.

is there one out there that is "better"(more stable, easier to install) then the others?

I flashed the leaked rom and flashed with Wozzers WM6.5 ROM...GPS is working great! now I just gotta see which software will work the best. The setup is pretty stable. As for it being easy to install....its pretty easy to install. I mean there step-by-step directions telling you how to do flashed the leaked ROM and the cooked ROM. But just get like SPB Backups or Sprite Backup or some kind of backup software...backup all your data and files and just flash away.
