I used TrekBuddy on my previous Java phone, it's completely free and was great. Any recommendation for Omnia, preferably one that doesn't rely on internet connection? Usually the map is downloaded separately for this type of GPS app.

IGO 8 works great on Omnia, they also have pretty good maps (based on TeleAtlas) and the UI is really nice - 3D buildings, some custom skins available.

Why not use TrekBuddy if you like it? I like it too and it works well on Omnia. Just install Esmertec Jbed (found on xda-developers.com) and then Trekbuddy B)

I use TBcutter to split maps 420x368 pixels slices. I've found that best for Omnia's resolution when using both, portrait and landscape, and no 'out of memory' messages appear.

Thanks, I'll consider IGO8. TrekBuddy is great, but the map available for my country isn't very detailed. I'll still use it in the mean time though.

IGO8 is only commercial? I'm not using the GPS for driving or anything, just for walking around the city.

Thanks for the Garmin info, may just be what I need.

Mate, I hope you didn't get rid of your Tom Tom yet coz your Omnia won't last long on very long driving trips using GPS.

I found out the hard way a couple of months ago when I drove from Sydney to Jarvis Bay (a 2.5 hour trip each way) using iGO8. Everything worked fine and it was not untill when I started to drive back home when the Omnia turned off by itself stating the battery was at low level. All the time I had the phone on the car charger thinking that using the car charger will let the Omnia use the car power or get charged automatically like on my previous HTC Trinity. I was using the car charger that came with the phone and nothing is wrong with the charger. After I closed iGO8, the charger worked fine as it supposed to do, but when turning on iGO again it'll stop charging the phone.

Bottom line: Omnia will get reall hot when using GPS application and stop charging the phone automatically, so it willl only use the battery power untill it drains.

Conclusion: Omnia is NOT suitable as GPS device for long driving trips unless you have a couple of spare batteries with you  B) which is very dissapointing to me. Don't get me wrong, the Omnia is still a good device, the only thing I'm dissappointed about is the GPS functionality.

Cheers.

i have 2 car chargers for my Omnia, they all charge very slow like you plug your phone to PC using USB cable.

that's why it drain the battery when you use GPS on a long driving. i have to use my wall outlet charger & a DC to AC adapter to charge in my car

I don't have this problem at all. Yesterday I drove a 6 hour round trip with my Omnia running iGo and connected to the car charger the whole time. Never had any issues and when I got home, it was on 90% charge so was obviously getting almost all the power it needed from the charger.

I suppose it might have helped that I have a brodit holder which sits over an air vent and I had cool air blowing so it was probably cooling the phone a bit.

Something or some setting has to be specifically wrong with your Omnia because mine works just fine plugged into the car charger whilst running the GPS. As far as being used as a GPS device, I believe that the Omnia is perfectly suitable! I use mine across Europe and the Mid East running Copilot Live 7 - which is a fantastic program by the way! Interface is good, maps are easy to upgrade, and the colors and graphics are nice. It was rather cheap too when compared with Tom Tom or Garmin, and installation and setup were both a snap. Johnny 64, I would look into your phone's settings, or even review your ROM because you issue has to be unique.

As far as using different car chargers and their different types of performance, all I can say is - beware of what you buy! Some of the aftermarket stuff out there is really bad. My factory car charger works very well and from 70% battery life will have my phone at 100% in about 40 minutes. The point is that once it is plugged in, the current and load being supplied to the device must be enough to both run the device and replenish it at the same time.

i use IGO8, it works great as long as you have a clear view at the sky (as with most GPS's)

Try setting your USB connection to Mass Storage and check if it charges faster! I noticed it was the only way to make my universal car lighter usb adapter to work with the Omnia. Somehow the ActiveSync connection prevents it from charging correctly.

I know it's a long time since you posted this message, but if it solves my car charging problem when running IGO8 you're my hero!

(The problem is that when running IGO, i cannot go for 15 minutes until charging quits.)

I struggle with Garmin XT as it also causes my Omnia to overheat and stop charging, especially here in South Africa where it can get quite hot in the Sun. I have positioned my cradle where I can redirect the aircon at it but I still need to dangle it directly in fornt of the vents to cool down from time to time :D

Is there any GPS software that is less processor intensive or do they all suffer from this?
